{"id":139868,"date":"2024-06-04T13:38:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T18:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=139868"},"modified":"2024-06-05T14:46:23","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T19:46:23","slug":"university-of-mississippi-scholarship-honors-oxford-chef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-of-mississippi-scholarship-honors-oxford-chef\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Mississippi Scholarship Honors Oxford Chef"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>John Currence scholarship to benefit students in nutrition and hospitality management program<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by Edwin Smith<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>University of Mississippi School of Applied Sciences<\/strong> is honoring chef and entrepreneur <strong>John Currence<\/strong> by creating a new scholarship in his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> John Currence Excellence in Nutrition and Hospitality Management Scholarship <\/strong>was introduced at the recent Legacy of Flavors event hosted by the school at the Oxford Conference Center. It will help full-time students enrolled in the nutrition and hospitality management program who show promise as future leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Having this scholarship named after me is something that I never would have imagined happening,&#8221; Currence said. &#8220;It is an honor which words cannot truly express and I am grateful to all of those who have made it possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currence was recognized for his contributions to Oxford, Ole Miss, and the restaurant industry, including his support of charitable causes and serving as a mentor to young chefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The scholarship idea was to provide a means for future students to learn, lead and serve in the hospitality industry,&#8221; said <strong>Peter Grandjean<\/strong>, dean of the School of Applied Sciences. &#8220;As John so eloquently stated in his recognition speech, the hospitality industry\u2014and particularly, the food service industry\u2014is a hard grind. It takes sweat equity to enter and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It also takes passion, inspiration, innovation and persistence to do something remarkable. This scholarship will provide a path for those who are driven to apply those traits with a culinary and entrepreneurial spirit and make a difference in the lives and culture of Mississippians.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than twenty donors have contributed $150,000 to endow the scholarship.
