Seventeen students accepted to yearlong intensive language program<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen seniors in the\u00a0University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Language Flagship<\/strong> programs have been accepted into competitive Chinese <\/strong>and Arabic <\/strong>capstone year programs, setting a record for the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our students are the best,” said Donald Dyer<\/strong>, associate dean for faculty and academic affairs and Distinguished Professor<\/strong> of\u00a0Modern Languages<\/strong><\/a>. “These record numbers are a real indication of how strong our Flagship programs are.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As capstone participants, students spend their final year directly enrolled at a university in Taiwan <\/strong>or Morocco<\/strong>. They also complete an internship in a field of their choice while abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All 10 of the university’s\u00a0Arabic Language Flagship<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0students and seven\u00a0Chinese Language Flagship<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0students who applied to the program were accepted this year, Dyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The ratio of how many students apply and how many of those students are accepted has become, in large part, the measure of a Language Flagship program’s success,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In next year’s Arabic capstone, there are only 30 students accepted from all the programs, and 10 of them are Ole Miss students.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen Clark<\/strong>, co-director of the UM Arabic Flagship program and associate professor of modern languages, said the achievement reflects the program’s quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This achievement not only reflects the exceptional dedication and talent of our students but also underscores the strength and effectiveness of our program,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
