{"id":139333,"date":"2024-05-14T12:43:11","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T17:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=139333"},"modified":"2024-05-14T12:43:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T17:43:14","slug":"record-number-of-university-of-mississippi-flagship-students-accepted-for-capstone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/record-number-of-university-of-mississippi-flagship-students-accepted-for-capstone\/","title":{"rendered":"Record Number of University of Mississippi Flagship Students Accepted for Capstone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Seventeen students accepted to yearlong intensive language program<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seventeen seniors in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<strong>Language Flagship<\/strong> programs have been accepted into competitive <strong>Chinese <\/strong>and <strong>Arabic <\/strong>capstone year programs, setting a record for the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our students are the best,&#8221; said <strong>Donald Dyer<\/strong>, associate dean for faculty and academic affairs and <strong>Distinguished Professor<\/strong> of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modernlanguages.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Modern Languages<\/strong><\/a>. &#8220;These record numbers are a real indication of how strong our Flagship programs are.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As capstone participants, students spend their final year directly enrolled at a university in <strong>Taiwan <\/strong>or <strong>Morocco<\/strong>. They also complete an internship in a field of their choice while abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All 10 of the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arabic.olemiss.edu\/study-abroad-capstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Arabic Language Flagship<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0students and seven\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinese.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Chinese Language Flagship<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0students who applied to the program were accepted this year, Dyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The ratio of how many students apply and how many of those students are accepted has become, in large part, the measure of a Language Flagship program&#8217;s success,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In next year&#8217;s Arabic capstone, there are only 30 students accepted from all the programs, and 10 of them are Ole Miss students.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Allen Clark<\/strong>, co-director of the UM Arabic Flagship program and associate professor of modern languages, said the achievement reflects the program&#8217;s quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This achievement not only reflects the exceptional dedication and talent of our students but also underscores the strength and effectiveness of our program,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arabic Language Flagship students accepted to capstone this year are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mark Baisier, of Atlanta<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lee Holmes, of Tullahoma, Tennessee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caroline Leonard, of Knoxville, Tennessee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abigail Metcalf, of Jackson<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ben Newton, of La Grange, Texas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sydney Rehm, of Collierville, Tennessee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gabe Robin, of Lafayette, Louisiana<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hannah Scardino, of Tulsa, Oklahoma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jackie Stewart-Kuhn, of Mobile, Alabama<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matthew Young, of Oxford.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese Language Flagship students accepted to capstone this year are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hal Fox, of New Orleans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jonah Kocisko, of Fort Myers, Florida<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Katelin Lawrence, of Ocean Springs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Michael Luster, of Birmingham, Alabama<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zachary Partin, of Collierville, Tennessee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alyssa Tunstall, of Byhalia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sydney Woodard, of Paducah, Kentucky.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2002, the National Security Education Program&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelanguageflagship.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Language Flagship<\/a>\u00a0supports intensive programs in languages deemed critical for American government, business and military interests. They include Arabic, Chinese, <strong>Korean, <\/strong>and <strong>Portuguese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 13 U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1bC2Tv_BkNUFd6zicOB5R_p823Fg&amp;femb=1&amp;ll=25.80309720288497%2C-90.92663654240943&amp;z=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colleges and universities<\/a>\u00a0host Flagship programs. In 2003, <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> became one of the first institutions to be awarded a Chinese Flagship Program. The university&#8217;s Arabic Flagship Program launched in 2018, making UM one of only four institutions with multiple Flagship programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m trying to make my Arabic proficiency as superior as I can,&#8221; said Holmes, who is majoring in Arabic and international studies in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/croft.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Croft Institute<\/a>&nbsp;for International Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Having the highest proficiency as I possibly can in Arabic would help me for my future because I&#8217;m trying to get a job at the State Department, ideally.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holmes, who is also a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/boren-scholars-24\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David L. Boren scholarship<\/a>&nbsp;recipient, spent two months studying in Morocco during the summer of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I feel much more prepared this time, thanks to my Flagship professors,&#8221; Holmes said. &#8220;They&#8217;re some of the best teachers I&#8217;ve ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their effort, their compassion and how much they care about the students is incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baisier, an Arabic major with an international studies minor, completed a two-month\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arabic.olemiss.edu\/summers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summer program<\/a>\u00a0in Morocco and another in <strong>Jordan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The opportunity to entirely immerse myself in local culture is something you can&#8217;t do in two months,&#8221; said Baisier, who has also learned French and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With his eyes set on a career in diplomacy, soaking up Moroccan culture is a top priority for Baisier&#8217;s upcoming capstone year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me, cultural understanding is very important for things like diplomacy or any sort of state work,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, I hope that this capstone year will provide me with an even greater, more in-depth understanding of the subtle nuances and similarities between American and Moroccan cultures that, hopefully, I can apply in the professional world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is exactly the kind of skill the Language Flagship program was designed to instill, co-director Clark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;More than just language acquisition, (capstone) allows students to live the culture, navigate everyday challenges and gain nuanced understanding that can only come from direct experience,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This immersive experience is invaluable in transforming them into global citizens with a deep appreciation and understanding of the Arab world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zhini Zeng<\/strong>, associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/programs\/libarts\/bachelor-arts-chinese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chinese<\/a>\u00a0and co-director of the university&#8217;s Chinese Language Flagship Program, said she was excited to learn that seven of her students were accepted into the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This achievement is particularly special, considering the fact that this group of students embarked on this journey during the challenging time of the pandemic,&#8221; Zeng said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our program usually starts with an intensive pre-freshman summer program. However, this is the only group of students who did not have any summer training prior to their freshman year. Plus, their first study-abroad summer was also completely disrupted by COVID.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kocisko and Woodard are also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.borenawards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boren scholarship<\/a>\u00a0recipients. They will complete their capstone year at the Defense Language Institute in\u00a0<a><strong>Monterey, California<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Monterey program is usually for students who are more interested in working for the government after graduation,&#8221; Zeng said. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t have the internship component but provides more networking opportunities and career guide for federal jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Only Boren awardees can go to the California program.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ole Miss has enjoyed two consecutive years of record-breaking student acceptance into the capstone program, Dyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The students in these two programs are just tremendous,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The key to our students&#8217; linguistic success is that we have strong faculty, we recruit students nationwide, we keep small class sizes and offer tutoring support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daniel O&#8217;Sullivan<\/strong>, chair of the department of modern languages and professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modernlanguages.olemiss.edu\/french\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>French<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0believes the university has created something special when it comes to language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Learning languages like Chinese and Arabic come with particular challenges to English natives, but the faculty inspire the students to embrace the learning process,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;&#8220;Our record-breaking numbers come down to the hard work of our students and of our faculty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides talented students and faculty, the UM program also benefits from exceptional institutional support, Zeng said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This combination sets our
