\"Protomartyr_byAngelCeballos2\"<\/a>In a city full of brilliant people with dead-end jobs and dampened by bitter-cold winters, playing music offers a cheap outlet.\u00a0Protomartyr<\/b>\u2019s taut, austere rock music was incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed, feebly, by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable; hooky but off-kilter. There\u2019s a temptation to call it garage-rock, but that doesn\u2019t quite fit. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn\u2019t the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges\u2019 greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is \u201cstuck between the cracks.\u201d If that\u2019s the case, though, they aren\u2019t alone. <\/span><\/p>\n

Protomartyr\u2019s economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like\u00a0Pere Ubu<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0The Fall\u00a0<\/b>as well as local contemporaries like\u00a0Frustrations<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0Tyvek<\/b>\u00a0(whose frontman Kevin Boyer<\/strong> played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr).\u00a0Joe Casey<\/b>\u2019s dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates \u2014 guitarist\u00a0Greg Ahee<\/b>, drummer\u00a0Alex Leonard<\/b>\u00a0and bassist\u00a0Scott Davidson<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 room to redefine the band\u2019s sonic boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n
