{"id":138009,"date":"2024-03-29T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=138009"},"modified":"2024-03-28T16:10:06","modified_gmt":"2024-03-28T21:10:06","slug":"southern-literary-festival-celebrates-85-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/southern-literary-festival-celebrates-85-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Literary Festival Celebrates 85 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Held in Oxford for first time in a decade, event coincides with Oxford Conference for the Book<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time since 2014, the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> will host the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesouthernliteraryfestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Southern Literary Festival<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0April 4-6, 2024. The event, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary, annually brings some 150 Southern writers together for community building, workshops and networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At the heart of what we do with the fest is we celebrate young talent \u2013 young creative writers who are perhaps emerging or who have just won a contest for their writing,&#8221; said <strong>Beth Spencer<\/strong>, SLF board president and an O<strong>le Miss<\/strong> English professor. &#8220;We hold an annual competition where the winners come and read their work at the festival, which could be poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction or one-act plays.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival coincides with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/news\/2024\/03\/oxford-conference-for-the-book-turns-30\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30th anniversary of the <strong>Oxford Conference for the Book<\/strong><\/a>, which runs April 3-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is just a wonderful homecoming for Southern writers and students of Southern literature,&#8221; Spencer said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to brag, but we have a great lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We think that the experience for students to come to Oxford in the spring is unparalleled \u2013 there are 40-plus authors and speakers in the OCB alone, plus those that we&#8217;re bringing to the festival for breakout sessions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acclaimed author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.andredubus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Andre Dubus III<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will give a keynote speech for both events at 3 pm April 5 in the <strong>Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union<\/strong>. Dubus is the author of nine books, three of which are <em>New York Times<\/em> bestsellers: &#8220;House of Sand and Fog,&#8221; &#8220;The Garden of Last Days&#8221; and &#8220;Townie.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dubus has been a finalist for the <strong>National Book Award<\/strong> and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The <strong>National Magazine Award<\/strong> for Fiction, two <strong>Pushcart Prizes<\/strong> and an <strong>American Academy of Arts<\/strong> and <strong>Letters Award in Literature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the festival, <strong>University Libraries<\/strong> will host an archive exhibit, &#8220;Celebrating 85 Years of the Southern Literary Festival.&#8221; Housed on the second floor of the <strong>J.D. Williams Library<\/strong>, the exhibit will feature photography, programs and other materials from SLF events over the decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other highlights on the agenda include an open mic event featuring <strong>Derrick Harriell<\/strong>, poet and outgoing African American studies director, and a panel highlighting Master of Fine Arts programs and &#8220;establishing a community beyond the undergraduate experience,&#8221; Spencer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited that this festival has withstood the test of time for 85 years, and we&#8217;re glad to offer opportunities for our undergraduate creative writers to hear from our best local writers to improve their craft,&#8221; said Angela Green, event organizer and core lecturer in the UM <strong>Department of Writing and Rhetoric<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re lucky that we live in a place that is chock full of writers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most festival events will be held at or near the <strong>Oxford-University Depot<\/strong>.
