She called Wilson &#8220;one of our state&#8217;s most distinguished historians.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson has a love of Southern oddities, a fascination with death rituals and a passion for teaching, Blount said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Distinguished scholar, gifted writer, authority on Southern culture and history, collector of gewgaws, entranced by death \u2013 I still don&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;ve given you a full picture of the mind of Charles Wilson, but I&#8217;ve done the best I can,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson has written\u00a0a number of\u00a0books on Southern history and culture but said that his proudest achievement is his work on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/u12097671.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.vdEqlqwOcmUVNskYN6obRMZtMOM3RyiKViC2FJ84PGzXGtL71kICz8NQOyFapnMkSAlc7-2BzK9aB42-2F67UP9mMatN-2Few0SZVAJ-2BK8HseQZbS7AbNKcwsai1LUGvCa-2F9pZsKRlJQBI9PMyE1kEWWqQyA-3D-3Dm3Os_R9RepZGIWIaGVJozn4X-2FFTAT3dbsALeB-2BoKiVneOCu9b-2FqDMRSJngzAf4bU5gy4cGm6MlSEBLkru8Bi4lFIy-2F263cXczx5s7MitCxswvpWf7Zindigj9Vozv374pzEoyA993XaAyQkfa3EVCAyyMM8ouLV0ZY8Q29qXBHdIsAp5vDx6wwFsFwbRw7CuvnkiWN-2Bbdn0nu3mgU2yYpgQ7I4g38gTK9PZVzZVgAnSy8Rr9r27168RVVpV-2Bhsca5F7igOObDW1-2FzIfYWUTB0wWiATUp4M2MNrhsH-2BnSYnIrOUp3v46eyKjN-2BgcpTptw0Nw34C3LIVpKgqb-2BCcexhZpt5Cn1E-2FxJtOLNjEYYz6UIetEu-2FGWx0tnzFKDdeaAfAT65c7K-2B6ShsFCnaluyJ5CrgZdcaynoRjkc9Crg8wwhfON8-2F0DPlPTTfFhMqHE-2FIFAPJoebZL3nFjvIH4h8b4alnrUtGWXXwkR8SA1YCx3jQxkh6YznUY7sAlJBXoaXYrZtPqPnOn1lRtrKWjKkWAiBHmmH11ITgBOUKGA5JwthFKro0aH26416KdiVvmt4EiSd2LIBbYPrwFNwcUBZ1r9Mq4DQ-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Encyclopedia of Southern Culture<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0an encompassing look at what cultures, traditions and history make up the Southern identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That encyclopedia was our signature piece announcing to the world that we were an institute that was serious about looking at the South and provided research and teaching,&#8221; Wilson said. &#8220;The South has had a rich history, and out of that has come a rich culture, world-class artists, musicians, chefs, writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to study this rich heritage to see where we are today and to see where we want to go in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first encyclopedia \u2013 of which Wilson was the managing editor \u2013 published in 1989, Wilson swore to never work on another, Blount said.
