geology and geological engineering, and <strong>Sidike Paheding<\/strong>, assistant professor of computer science at <strong>Fairfield University<\/strong>, to study mine tailing impoundments, massive structures that store mining waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the increased interest in green energy and battery technology, the need for critical minerals and mining is increasing,&#8221; Oommen said. &#8220;That means mine tailings are going to be more and more prevalent, but\u00a0monitoring\u00a0these\u00a0dams\u00a0is a challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mining operations leave behind massive amounts of slurry, or solid waste, that is stored behind dams constructed of the same waste material, Oommen said. A dam in <strong>Brumadinho, Brazil<\/strong>, failed in 2019,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/u12097671.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=9rudYHeevExQpJ5A1h-2BA7aUHmLEzO9FAUEpMDE6hHitMSnvRtB9gl-2F2WyHL5kZWJy0vdQIVitc7Zvl-2FTcs2z8OPUCYhgC2jj2UX-2FyiTpngRiW-2FUp0Xn7I4U0bb-2Bfw-2FhfWVrk_NCASQegA8-2BF9JzL0ljDze6GdMp-2BDqoMSjHakCwO0HlyzU7Oqe0-2BPwAidkgPe1s4CS2wV8N3G7h55G0DDIQcTHpuOKy1Qbo0YhaGWBqAsBvbQcDB6cYOTpuPiIF-2Bq3TiVGCPN8Szm5I-2Fqihtpp2FZGM2F5OFaS88EDZCDWNZy3o5jeTk8REu-2FpjBBi2RVgzsbD-2Be9j5NzsW1-2BIawvC6jYxdoApnWCEOiSxFfJ0fg7fT8b9XuYveIY8PjR-2B4OOUee1AQ-2BZB6dN8iTpW4Yx-2BEs9RkDxC5X6tTi81ojsiL0jxOW6JwNug0ipHI8YiPi-2FOdlHuoRbCXMrYnznfVYUnRrqxZ3b9fxjiUurwOmjixztT3jYgrQHwTHDe7HT-2F8szu3xa-2BV0vP41z83B2ZgjoqD6msxqXs62BBiNuj2oVj2oXlh8doXgziVQTRMU-2B9xejUR2hJf6-2F5zKsiahNMDr-2BQcdVKpxnXf3P69q1fF4DE3PKlMYzWCQ3PyR73uf4mN1T1-2F0Ew-2FwmhE3k5l3UinSPE0tQ2qtzqaXtXT8fDgM-2FWU7URwmiY0vpCv44ENxBGM7EhwbUwOmjC29aGzCC6siRswz-2BwA-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sending a wall of waste and mud into a small town more than half a mile away, killing more than 240 people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mine tailings dams are really large geotechnical, earthen structures, and they&#8217;re prone to failure with extreme weather events,&#8221; Oommen said. &#8220;The consequences of failure can be catastrophic both in terms of casualties and environmental effects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar failures have happened in <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>. When mines shut down, oversight of the impoundments often becomes lax, Oommen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The challenge is when the mining operation is happening, there is a lot of interest in the dam and its upkeep, but once the operation is done and there is no more revenue being generated, the companies are gone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, who is going to\u00a0maintain\u00a0this? Often, it becomes no one&#8217;s property or it falls into the hands of the government to\u00a0maintain\u00a0it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, maintaining and monitoring these tailings dams is a challenge, especially if you have to do it manually, using traditional methods.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oommen and Paheding&#8217;s research will use satellite and environmental data to detect whether a dam is at risk of failure.
