Oxford <\/strong>has a reputation as a place for live music, but sometimes good, original live music is hard to find at a decent hour. Luke Fisher<\/strong> and David Anderson<\/strong>, the founders of the Red Clay Music Society<\/strong>, sought an opportunity to merge the touring artist with local musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past year meeting with local musicians, venues, and festival organizers the pair sought to create a format that focused on building a community of musicians and creating opportunities for local musicians to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red Clay Music Society launches March 1\u20132, 2024, with two music events. Friday, March 1 features a songwriter\u2019s pop-up to announce a partnership with the Mississippi Songwriters Festival<\/strong> to host a Hill County<\/strong> edition each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pop Up Songwriters event will feature Mississippi <\/strong>songwriters performing and sharing stories at Wonderbird Spirits<\/strong>. Tickets to the event are $10. The event features special guests Alanna Mosely, Ryan Miller, Jeff McCreary<\/strong>, and Grammy<\/strong>-nominated Jimbo Mathus<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coordinators for the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance and the Mississippi Songwriters Festival will share how Hill Country artists can become involved in this state-wide program. Fisher and Anderson hope this pop-up event will assist in building year-round events featuring local artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, March 2 at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center,<\/strong> the second day of the Songwriters Festival will feature Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash<\/strong>. Anderson, who relocated to Oxford, previously hosted concerts at his The Roastery of Cave Creek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to create music listening room events. Experiences that connect the audience and the artist through great music, well-constructed lyrics, and the chance to talk with the musicians.\u201d shared Anderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash are the voice and vision of songwriter Mark Stuart<\/strong> who has performed with almost every major artist in the Country and Americana music community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling Stone describes them as \u201cpure Americana heart and soul.\u201d Stuart was personally given permission to use the band\u2019s name by Johnny Cash<\/strong> himself. He was also honored by the Man in Black with an invitation to record songs at Cash\u2019s own home in Hendersonville, Tennessee<\/strong>. Two other iconic music legends, Willie Nelson<\/strong> and Merle Haggard<\/strong>, were also early believers who were instrumental in helping Stuart get his start. Tickets for the show are $25 and $20 for Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong> members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
