Six speakers will reveal thought-provoking and creative ideas during the\u00a0ninth annual TEDx University of Mississippi<\/strong> event on Tuesday, February 20 at the University of Mississippi\u2019s\u00a0Ford Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>. The in-person event begins at 7 pm with preshow\u00a0activities beginning at 6:30 pm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s theme is \u2018Illuminate,\u2019\u201d said Emilie Chandler<\/strong>, Director of Public Relations for\u00a0TEDx University of Mississippi. \u201cSpeakers will illuminate ideas that people, communities, and organizations are exploring to optimize outcomes.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason Bouldin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A nationally acclaimed portraitist from the Mississippi Delta, Jason\u00a0won the international competition for the Portrait Society of America\u2019s Draper Grand Prize in 2002. In his\u00a0talk, he will advocate for a broader interpretation of the term \u201cartist\u201d and reimagine how the label\u00a0might inspire all to find more meaning in our lives. Jason received a BA in Art History from\u00a0Harvard University and received his studio training directly from his father, renowned artist\u00a0Marshall Bouldin III.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Brynn Loftness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A passionate researcher addressing the existing gaps in current pediatric and\u00a0family-care mental health resources, Loftness develops machine algorithms integrating\u00a0wearable sensors, health records, and off-body sensors to unlock insights into human behavior\u00a0 and well-being. She envisions the application of these new technologies revolutionizing the\u00a0modern mental health care system, starting at the crucial early stages of life when children have the greatest potential for long-term success. Loftness is a PhD candidate in the Complex\u00a0Systems and Data Science program at University of Vermont and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. She also holds a Visiting Researcher position in the\u00a0Sabeti Lab and the Brown University MAPPS Center through her affiliation with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jaylin R. Smith<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Smith is a native of Greenwood, Mississippi, and graduate student at the University of\u00a0Mississippi matriculating in Journalism and New Media. Being a Black woman raised in the\u00a0 Mississippi Delta has given Jaylin a host of experiences that have molded her values of\u00a0 community, social activism, self-identity, and cultural awareness. These values have inspired\u00a0her TEDx talk regarding cultural competency and Black women\u2019s hair. Smith received two\u00a0bachelor\u2019s degrees in Mass Communications and Speech Communications from Mississippi\u00a0Valley State University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Alisha Rai<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A disability advocate and family physician practicing in Alberta, Canada, Dr. Rai seeks to inspire hope by sharing her unfiltered journey to and through motherhood. She calls on\u00a0us to address infertility and birth traumas openly and intentionally. Together with her husband,\u00a0Liam, Rai founded Hope for Cerebral Palsy, a non-profit providing access to private early\u00a0intervention therapies for children with cerebral palsy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jazmine D. Kelley<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Diversity Education & Strategic Initiatives Director at the University of\u00a0Mississippi, Kelley is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Higher Education from the University of Mississippi and explores the relationship between student success and institutional\u00a0effectiveness for systematically excluded groups. In her studies she found a reciprocal\u00a0relationship between how institutions make decisions and the ultimate success of students.\u00a0Kelley has a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as a Master of Science in Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion from Mississippi State University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

David Hamilton<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Anubis Improv founder and improv instructor, Hamilton uses improv (improvisational\u00a0 performance) to help people tap into their creativity and develop communication skills. Hamilton\u00a0has been creating improv curriculum and coaching since 2014. He performs improv with the\u00a0dupe troupe Kinross Kasunick, and is a member of the film collective Windbreaker. He believes\u00a0anyone can harness the power of improv to develop active listening skills and enhance\u00a0communication capabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Organizing the event are Madalyn Dudley<\/strong>, chief of staff; Morgan McCann<\/strong>, assistant chief of\u00a0staff; Kate Hooper<\/strong>, TEDx-licensed organizer and faculty adviser, along with a team of twenty-two students and five consultants. No TEDxUniversityofMississippi event is complete without\u00a0entertainment. This year\u2019s entertainment includes The Mississippians<\/strong> jazz band and violinist\u00a0Jiwon Lee<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
