University, Miss. (TLV) – On Sunday, May 4, 2014, \u00a0a memorial service was held for Confederate soldiers buried on the University of Mississippi<\/strong> campus. Over 160 people attended the event\u00a0which included reenactors, speakers, music, food, and plenty of flags.<\/span><\/p>\n

The memorial was held at the Confederate cemetery located right behind Tad Smith Coliseum<\/strong> on the Ole Miss campus. Over 1,000 Conderate soldiers are buried there. Most of them fought at the 1862 Battle of Shiloh<\/strong>. The Ole Miss campus served as a hospital during the Civil War and it was controlled by both sides at various points in the war. Originally there were Union<\/strong> soldiers buried here as well, but after the war they were reinterred\u00a0at the National Cemetery in Corinth, Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The University Greys<\/strong> chapter of \u00a0Oxford<\/strong>, Mississippi along with the Bedford Forrest Chapter<\/strong> of Hernando<\/strong> of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV)\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong>the United Daughters of the Confederacy <\/strong>hosts the memorial service each year on the first Sunday of May.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers included Larry Mardis<\/strong> and Jon Rawls<\/strong> of the University Greys \u00a0and prayers by\u00a0Rev. James Taylor<\/strong> of the Calhoun Avengers SCV<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The featured speaker was Stephen Enzweiler<\/strong>, author of Oxford In The Civil War<\/em>. Enzweiler gave a fascinating speech that detailed the lives of several of the soldiers who fought in the war and were buried in the cemetery. He also spoke of the doctors and nurses who tended to the wounded soldiers at the Ole Miss hospital, and Oxford’s importance to both sides who fought during the Civil War.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music was played by Alan Sibley & The Magnolia Ramblers<\/strong>, an acoustic quartet which included a guitarist, double bass, banjo, and violin The Forrest Highlanders<\/strong> held a\u00a0bagpipe procession. A wreath was presented by Frances <\/strong>and Boyce\u00a0<\/strong>DeLashmit<\/strong>\u00a0 and laid at the center of the cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n

In previous years, the SCV’s memorial service has held gun salutes and cannon fire, however the Ole Miss campus police arrived before the service,\u00a0and disallowed gun fire of any kind.<\/span><\/p>\n
