\u2018Tis the season\u2014and Oxford Civic Choru<\/strong>s invites you to celebrate the joy with its 25th Anniversary Winter Concert<\/strong> at 3 pm on December 9 at David H. Nutt Auditorium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Featuring John Rutter<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cMagnificat<\/strong>\u201d plus some clever and rousing arrangements of other seasonal works, the concert is sure to transport listeners of all ages straight to the heart of the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert includes accompaniment by members of the L-O-U Symphony<\/strong>, the North Mississippi Symphony<\/strong>, and the Memphis Symphony<\/strong> orchestras,\u00a0funded in part by a $1,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission<\/strong>, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts<\/strong>, a federal agency. The choir also received a $1,000 grant from Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow<\/strong> to purchase music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis season is a special one and we are just so excited and thankful that we have been awarded a grant from both MAC and LOFT,\u201d said Oxford Civic Chorus board president Chris Koban<\/strong>. \u201cWe have returned to some very challenging music that goes beyond what we have done in the recent past. Having a full orchestra to play with us is just going to be awesome. It\u2019s so wonderful to get to sing with so many other talented musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debra Atkinson<\/strong> and Creighton Holder<\/strong> have been directing the choir since 2021. When they chose the music for the winter concert, they had in mind two themes: Christmas of course, and peace in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreighton and I both agreed that \u2018Magnificat\u2019 was a great text to use for this time of year,\u201d Atkinson said. \u201cIt is one of the oldest hymns of the church. And we both just love Rutter! For the other works, we were trying to find things that would be less sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One song, \u201cHope for Resolution\u201d juxtaposes an ancient European chant, in English, with a South African freedom song, in Zulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt kind of shows that even when cultures are very different, they can come together in peace and unity,\u201d Atkinson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listeners will also be treated to a fun and unusual arrangement of \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas\u201d by Bob Chilcott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt just really struck me when I first heard it,\u201d Atkinson said. \u201cIt\u2019s so cleverly arranged. He took the \u2018five gold rings\u2019 section and used different styles of music for every time that appears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
