Mississippi banks&#8217; community engagement protects them from the economic highs and lows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They understand their market and are able to maintain employment better than the larger banks,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mississippi banks also have more total deposits than other banks and fewer uninsured deposits. Uninsured deposits exceed the FDIC&#8217;s $250,000 insurable limit. Mississippi banks have a diversified mix of residential, commercial, auto and personal loans, Cyree said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in comparison to other states, the proportion of commercial real estate loans in Mississippi banks is relatively low, averaged at 182% of capital for the first two quarters of 2023. This is a less risky approach that pays off when &#8220;times get tough,&#8221; Cyree said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Core deposits, which are typically stable deposits such as checking and savings accounts, and other small deposits make up nearly 90% of Mississippi banks&#8217; funding, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A lot of really big banks make money on nontraditional banking activities like mergers and acquisitions \u2013 underwriting debt and a lot of things the Mississippi banks don&#8217;t do,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Mississippi banks are traditional banks; they take deposits from regular people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One significant performance indicator for national banks is their return on assets, or ROA. This profitability ratio gives insight into how effectively a bank can manage its assets to produce profits. In the first quarter of 2023, Mississippi banks had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/u12097671.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=9rudYHeevExQpJ5A1h-2BA7QQXENrmuabsw6vkUJ-2BSB6Zrl7sjrOeQPUT0ooTHwBKexo2rivbuBHjhcVfZ6jVM-2B-2Fe9hOwLz36H3DTGxttIm1w-3DjmDp_NCASQegA8-2BF9JzL0ljDze6GdMp-2BDqoMSjHakCwO0HlyzU7Oqe0-2BPwAidkgPe1s4CS2wV8N3G7h55G0DDIQcTHpuOKy1Qbo0YhaGWBqAsBvbQcDB6cYOTpuPiIF-2Bq3TiVGCPN8Szm5I-2Fqihtpp2FZGM2F5OFaS88EDZCDWNZy3o5jeTk8REu-2FpjBBi2RVgzsbD-2Be9j5NzsW1-2BIawvC6jYxdoApnWCEOiSxFfJ0fg7fT8b9XuYveIY8PjR-2B4OOUee1AQ-2BZB6dN8iTpW4Yx-2BEs9RkDxC5X6tTi81ojsiL0jxOXuNETXZqb3whnK1vWAHfUxBzTB-2FY6K4tgzmotgk8xmba9JjKvz4rgDEo6hYAE7QLNnhjP-2BUJ2OaLLy5zmQvM7KbAwVNunv6FjeWQvCtJVaMNhh2055t-2BnarJx0GPZFWPdmdEKCLNQmZ64wPrntFeWtsy3UVo-2BWFrJ8UZ3CpqHvG8iTKa2h56-2BgTSNZOmPfiof69TJgGeSg5-2FAeZ2ZuC8EzML-2FOCOo7BkT5KXiLl6dZhnciqG88AxGlyhFO7LTDk2wAFF6vlRl2SRze0-2F6nKMFILP-2FpNiivxrb6skouR94R5w-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.04% ROA<\/a>, while the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/u12097671.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=9rudYHeevExQpJ5A1h-2BA7QQXENrmuabsw6vkUJ-2BSB6Y74j5Z7NnKlxT1ukQ2ORI9E4qJIQqJCF5AgjNAag5fOU5Faw4ixL6Egsu4KZGSXnZxEESk-2FW94lHlOYJQ0ocLh73jt5Vbo4TionFdPGGP4RLqhSHnR7g-2B6uBqaHKHmelQ-3DmSSW_NCASQegA8-2BF9JzL0ljDze6GdMp-2BDqoMSjHakCwO0HlyzU7Oqe0-2BPwAidkgPe1s4CS2wV8N3G7h55G0DDIQcTHpuOKy1Qbo0YhaGWBqAsBvbQcDB6cYOTpuPiIF-2Bq3TiVGCPN8Szm5I-2Fqihtpp2FZGM2F5OFaS88EDZCDWNZy3o5jeTk8REu-2FpjBBi2RVgzsbD-2Be9j5NzsW1-2BIawvC6jYxdoApnWCEOiSxFfJ0fg7fT8b9XuYveIY8PjR-2B4OOUee1AQ-2BZB6dN8iTpW4Yx-2BEs9RkDxC5X6tTi81ojsiL0jxOXuNETXZqb3whnK1vWAHfUxBzTB-2FY6K4tgzmotgk8xmba9JjKvz4rgDEo6hYAE7QLNnhjP-2BUJ2OaLLy5zmQvM7KbAwVNunv6FjeWQvCtJVaMMhRv3DB7yUIra5GwzVkKcCKdIs-2FD0XVjKFY6cmkE0cY8umFiPbuIyb1bX4ELprUgu2kDFf1Tuu-2FxuhhtqAxY1zK7Ai5pOScRNfIv60i3Q5BlMU4BRI9MBMfoRl8P8RTS2S2L-2F2tyluh1J-2Bj5CsR0ttSHzaYYEPeolGNS0QvEXmqYEHkuN7zcT0xdtKYQeLyCA-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average nationally was 1.36%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stable ROA may be an indication of lower performance in some years, but adds to long-term stability in the state, Cyree said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen this for many, many years,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Often, Mississippi banks will perform below the industry in times of high growth in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When the industry falls, however, Mississippi will do better, and this adds the stability of our banking industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mississippi consumers benefit from the state&#8217;s traditional banking model, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When you think about the banks in our state, they are very relationship-oriented,&#8221; Cyree said. &#8220;You are more likely to get a loan here than with a large bank in a different state because we are a community banking state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our banks have the experience weathering these types of storms.
