{"id":133478,"date":"2023-10-18T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=133478"},"modified":"2023-10-17T14:04:02","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T19:04:02","slug":"criminal-justice-reform-activist-shares-inspirational-story-october-26-2023-at-the-university-of-mississippi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/criminal-justice-reform-activist-shares-inspirational-story-october-26-2023-at-the-university-of-mississippi\/","title":{"rendered":"Criminal Justice Reform Activist Shares Inspirational Story October 26, 2023 at the University of Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Burton featured October 26, 2023, at inaugural Dr. Jeanette Jennings Lecture Series<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Susan Burton<\/strong>, a visionary and inspirational leader of the criminal justice reform movement, will give the\u00a0inaugural <strong>Dr. Jeanette Jennings Lecture Series<\/strong>\u00a0on October 26, 2023, at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented by the university&#8217;s <strong>African American<\/strong> studies and the <strong>Prison-to-College Pipeline<\/strong> programs, the 6 pm event in <strong>Bondurant Hall<\/strong>, Room 204C, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We could not be prouder or more honored to host Ms. Burton, given the need for her voice within our community,&#8221; said <strong>Derrick Harriell<\/strong>, director of African American studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lecture series, funded by an anonymous gift in 2022, honors Jennings, who became the first Black <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> faculty member in 1970.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Jennings was pivotal to the advancement of Black studies and the cradling of Black students,&#8221; said Harriell, who is also the <strong>Otillie Schillig<\/strong> Associate Professor of English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burton&#8217;s lecture is an official event in the observation of the university&#8217;s 175th anniversary&nbsp;celebration themed &#8220;A Legacy of Calling.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>, Burton\u00a0is a formerly incarcerated woman and advocate for restoring basic civil and human rights to those who have served time. Her ability to rebuild her life serves as a dramatic example of how others can break the cycle of imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Burton puts it: &#8220;Mistakes belong to the past. We belong to the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is author of the award-winning memoir, &#8220;Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight for Incarcerated Women&#8221; (The New Press, 2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is also the founder of A New Way of Life, a nonprofit organization providing housing and other support to formerly incarcerated women. ANWOL&#8217;s approach to reentry is internationally recognized as an innovative model that creates welcoming and healing spaces for women to rejoin their communities after imprisonment while developing as leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of Burton&#8217;s work has been recognized through numerous awards, including the prestigious <strong>Citizen Activist Award<\/strong> from the <strong>Harvard Kennedy School of Government<\/strong>, the <strong>Encore Purpose Prize<\/strong>, and the <strong>James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award<\/strong>.
