Ruha\u00a0Benjamin to deliver keynote October 2 at The Inn at Ole Miss ballroom<\/em>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ruha\u00a0Benjamin<\/strong>, a renowned Princeton University<\/strong> professor and author, is the inaugural speaker in the James H. Meredith Lecture Series<\/strong>\u00a0on Monday, October 2, 2023,\u00a0at the University of Mississippi<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The free event, hosted by\u00a0Division\u00a0of Diversity and Community Engagement<\/strong><\/a>, is set for 6 pm in the ballroom of The Inn at Ole Miss<\/strong>. To register, click\u00a0here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is a continuation of the commitment university leaders made during the 60th commemoration of Meredith’s enrollment at UM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Dr. Benjamin’s most recent book,\u00a0‘Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want,’\u00a0will be the theme for the event,”\u00a0said\u00a0Shawnboda\u00a0Mead<\/strong>, vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement.\u00a0“Her work offers a practical and principled approach to transforming our communities and helping us build a more just and joyful world.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, university leaders will announce the inaugural James H. Meredith Community Transformation Award<\/strong>. This new recognition is designed to empower students with leadership skills\u00a0required\u00a0for social change and a commitment to lifelong community service, Mead said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recipients receive a grant of up to $4,000 and an additional $1,000 academic scholarship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The award provides students with an experiential learning opportunity that contributes to the development of their capacity for community-based leadership,” she said. “Students who receive this award will gain insight into assessing possible solutions to problems that impact communities.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin is the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of African American Studies<\/strong> at Princeton University. She is also the founding director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab<\/strong>, and author of the book\u00a0“Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code”\u00a0(Polity, 2019). Her work focuses on racial equity in terms of science,\u00a0medicine\u00a0and technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Marguerite Casey Foundation Freedom Scholar Award<\/strong> and the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching<\/strong> at Princeton.\u00a0Her most recent book,\u00a0“Viral Justice”\u00a0(Princeton University\u00a0Press, 2022), won the 2023 Stowe Prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our faculty, and students are definitely excited and in support of this incredible event,”\u00a0said Derrick Harriell<\/strong>, director of the UM African American<\/strong> studies program and\u00a0Ottilie\u00a0Schillig\u00a0Associate Professor of English<\/strong> and African American Studies<\/strong>.\u00a0“Dr.\u00a0Ruha\u00a0Benjamin is an incredible scholar who speaks directly to the current conditions and obstacles that plague us all.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
