{"id":132367,"date":"2023-09-15T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=132367"},"modified":"2023-09-15T10:59:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T15:59:12","slug":"heather-mcteer-toney-speaker-for-university-of-mississippi-honors-convocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/heather-mcteer-toney-speaker-for-university-of-mississippi-honors-convocation\/","title":{"rendered":"Heather McTeer Toney Speaker for University of Mississippi Honors Convocation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Accomplished attorney and author to reflect on climate change and African Americans<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heather McTeer Toney<\/strong>, an accomplished attorney and author, will deliver the keynote address for the <strong>Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College<\/strong>&#8216;s fall <strong>Honors Convocation<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Convocation will take place at 7:30 pm September 26, 2023, in the <strong>Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>. Admission is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme for the convocation is &#8220;Cotton, Cornrows and Climate Change: Diversity as a Solution to the Climate Crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;McTeer Toney was selected because she is a citizen-scholar who has made a large impact on the political and cultural landscape of the state of Mississippi,&#8221; said <strong>Ethel Scurlock<\/strong>, the college&#8217;s dean. &#8220;She is a celebrated politician, an exceptional scholar and activist who is working in fields that many of our students are interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope that many will stay after the presentation has ended and maximize their time with her on our campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>McTeer Toney<\/strong>, an <strong>Oxford <\/strong>resident, is the author of &#8220;Before the Streetlights Come On: Black America&#8217;s Urgent Call for Climate Change&#8221; (Broadleaf Books, 2023). Her book underscores the disparity between Black Americans&#8217; low perception of climate change and the large impact the phenomenon has had on the Black community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Students who attend fall convocation will hear from a nationally-recognized expert on climate change and learn how their efforts can make a difference in the future of our planet,&#8221; Scurlock said. &#8220;I am especially excited about giving away 100 copies of Toney&#8217;s most recent book, so students can dig deeper into the issues she will address in her speech.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At age 27, McTeer Toney became the youngest mayor ever in <strong>Greenville<\/strong>. She is also the city&#8217;s first Black mayor and first female mayor. In 2014, President <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong> appointed her as regional administrator for the <strong>Environmental Protection Agency<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Southeast Region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McTeer Toney serves as the executive director for the <strong>Beyond Petrochemicals Campaign<\/strong>. She has also served as senior director for <strong>Moms Clean Air Force<\/strong> and vice president of community engagement for the <strong>Environmental Defense Fund.<\/strong> She is appeared in on various networks and outlets, including <strong>CNN<\/strong>, <strong>MSNBC<\/strong>, <strong>Fox News<\/strong>, <strong><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/strong>, and the <strong><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1997 by <strong>Jim <\/strong>and <strong>Sally Barksdale<\/strong>, the Honors College houses more than 1,600 <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> undergraduate students from all the university&#8217;s schools and College of Liberal Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Edwin B.
