As locally grown food increases in popularity, you\u2019re just as likely to see skinny jeans as mom jeans at either of Oxford\u2019s two farmers markets.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Word on the street: It\u2019s hip to buy local.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

But \u201clocavorism\u201d isn\u2019t simply the latest food fad\u2026It\u2019s a revival of the way we human beings have eaten for most of our history: Consuming what grows best where we live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI only buy local _____\u201d sounds great and all, but it\u2019s even better when we understand why the way we shop matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

So why does local food matter?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"YokelFoodRecipe_sized\"<\/a><\/em>\u2022Safer food. Food that comes from just up the road is less susceptible to harmful contamination and allows consumers to ask farmers directly how their food is grown.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022Smaller carbon footprint. Because food doesn\u2019t have to travel thousands of miles to get to your fork!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022Fresher, healthier, better tasting food. Seasonal veggies and fruits harvested, distributed, and eaten on the same day can be enjoyed at the peak of its nutritional value. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022Keeping local dollars local. When you hand a dollar to a local farmer or artisan, you\u2019re helping build a thriving local food economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022Community building. Small farms are gathering places for like-minded people, unifying communities, offering educational opportunities, and drawing visitors from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n
