{"id":130209,"date":"2023-06-30T16:16:30","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T21:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=130209"},"modified":"2023-06-30T16:16:33","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T21:16:33","slug":"university-launching-undergraduate-creative-writing-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-launching-undergraduate-creative-writing-program\/","title":{"rendered":"University Launching Undergraduate Creative Writing Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>New bachelor\u2019s degree is first of its kind in SEC\u00a0<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For almost 20 years, the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> has had one of the nation\u2019s premier MFA programs in creative writing. This fall, the university is launching a companion bachelor\u2019s degree program \u2013 the first of its kind in the <strong>SEC<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new program will complement the <strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong>&#8216; creative and fine arts programs in theater, film, art and music. Students will learn to write in multiple genres: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dustin Parson<\/strong>s, senior lecturer in the <strong>Department of English<\/strong>, has been named the first director of the program. He will be joined by new faculty members <strong>Sheila Sundar<\/strong> and <strong>Michael X. Wang<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Jake Skeets<\/strong>, a <strong>Din\u00e9<\/strong> (<strong>Navajo<\/strong>) poet who will be the visiting <strong>Grisham Writer-in-Residence<\/strong> for the year. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have many students who are eager to learn about the craft and profession of creative writing,\u201d said <strong>Caroline Wigginton<\/strong>, chair and professor of English. \u201cThese students in the program intend to become professional authors \u2013 such as novelists and poets \u2013 or to work in the editing and publishing industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to these more traditional writing professions, our students will be well-prepared for other careers in the creative fields, including video game design, film and television development, marketing, long-form journalism, web content creation, and travel, food, and nature writing, to name just a few fields.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parsons holds a MFA\u00a0from <strong>Bowling Green State University<\/strong> and is the author of \u201cExploded View: Essays on Fatherhood, with Diagrams\u201d (<strong>University of Georgia Press<\/strong>, 2018). He teaches in many genres but specializes in creative nonfiction, graphic writing and fiction, and digital editing and publishing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy short-term goals for the BFA in creative writing involve enriching the artistic experience on our campus,\u201d Parsons said. \u201cThe program will enrich the life of this campus, bringing successful, published visiting writers, developing our undergraduate magazine, and supporting student readings and publication.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will also intensify the offerings we have in writing at the undergraduate level.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parson\u2019s long-term goals include training students to read like writers, making them better at a fading skill \u2013\u2013 reading comprehension.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hope to graduate confident communicators who succeed in a variety of professions,\u201d he said. \u201cThe idea of thinking \u2018creatively\u2019 really is a sought-after skill these days, and competent writers of content for all different disciplines will have little trouble on the job market when they graduate.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The curriculum is writing- and workshop-intensive, offering students many opportunities to develop their writing in community with other BFA students, Wigginton said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year of the program features cohort classes in such subjects as introduction to creative writing; introduction to form, craft and influence; and introduction to digital editing and publishing,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents also take creative writing courses in an array of genres. They learn about a variety of literatures so they can build a portfolio of literary influences and hone their style.
