Eight rising seniors learn about community engagement, leadership in UM Summer College\u00a0<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eight Mississippi <\/strong>high school students are studying ways to help their communities this summer as a part of the\u00a0University of Mississippi<\/a>\u00a0Summer College for High School Students<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0program, “Building Community Change in the Mississippi Delta.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program, led by the\u00a0Office of Pre-College Programs<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0College of Liberal Arts<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement<\/strong><\/a>, took students to several towns across north Mississippi in June to study inequity, community problems and how to make change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur mission is to fight poverty through education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and we know that attaining higher education is a very significant lever of economic mobility,\u201d said Laura Martin<\/strong>, associate director of the institute. \u201cIt\u2019s giving the students a lexicon to unveil some of the injustices they\u2019ve seen in society at large or closer to home and giving them the tools to talk about solutions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about both individual life opportunity and social change.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students earned six college credit hours in sociology and community engaged leadership and spent time talking to community and business leaders in Pontotoc, Ecru, Blue Springs<\/strong>, and New Albany<\/strong>. In each city, the students focused on a different aspect of community engagement, including work and the economy, health and medicine, and race, gender and sexuality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis class is preparing them for some of the concepts of sociology and we are working with them on presentations right now that tie into issues that are important to them,\u201d said J.R. Love<\/strong>, project manager for the institute. \u201cThey\u2019re seeing how these sociological frameworks, theories and concepts can guide some of their decision-making about the challenges they face in their own communities and in their own personal lives.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
