\"BluesDoctors1\"<\/a>Adam Gussow<\/strong> and Alan Gross<\/strong>, a.k.a. The Blues Doctors<\/strong>,\u00a0are Mississippi-based blues veterans who play a mix of Delta standards and urban grooves from the Texas-to-Chicago axis with some New Orleans funk thrown in. They\u2019re a two-man band with a full-on sound: Gussow on harmonica and drumset, Gross on guitar, with both men sharing vocal duties.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roosters Happy Hour<\/em> is their debut recording as a duo. It includes blues standards such as \u201cNext Time You See Me,\u201d \u201cRock Me,\u201d \u201cPride and Joy,\u201d and \u201cSweet Home Chicago\u201d; jazz and R&B favorites <\/span>such as Stanley Turrentine<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cSugar\u201d and the Crusaders<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cPut It Where You Want It\u201d; and a handful of originals by Gussow, including a funky chromatic harp workout, \u201cStaten Island Hurricane Blues,\u201d and the Hooker<\/strong>-style boogie, \u201cI Need Your Love.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"BluesDoctors_CDCoverDebut\"<\/a>Named for the steady Friday gig at Rooster\u2019s Blues House<\/strong> in Oxford, Mississippi, where Gussow and Gross hammered our their dynamic two-man sound, Roosters Happy Hour<\/em> will please traditionalists and adventurous blues fans alike. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Blues Doctors are a power blues trio without the bass, driven by Gussow\u2019s thumping kickdrum; they\u2019re a hard-swinging jump combo distilled to the bare essentials, propelled by Gross\u2019s jangling guitar and Gussow\u2019s dazzling harp lines. Roosters Happy Hour<\/em> is down-home blues with a big-city angle of attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Marking Gross\u2019s debut as a recording artist, Roosters Happy Hour<\/em> also continues Gussow\u2019s transformation from a harmonica virtuoso into a one-man rhythm machine. Those who remember the early 1990s recordings of Satan and Adam<\/strong> will enjoy the Blues Doctors\u2019s remakes of \u201cWatermelon Man\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Get Around Much Anymore\u201d\u2014this time with Gussow in the percussion chair.<\/span><\/p>\n
