The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour <\/strong>closes out its spring season of live shows this Thursday, April 27<\/strong> at 6 pm at the Powerhouse Arts Center<\/strong>. Admission is free and the public is invited. A special fundraising event with food, drink, and music, A Taste of the Delta<\/strong>, will commence at 7 pm following the radio show. Partial proceeds will benefit Thacker Mountain Radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests for the season finale will include gospel rockers The Staples Jr. Singers<\/strong>, New Orleans<\/strong> author Tom Piazza<\/strong> and fife\/drummer Sharde Thomas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show is hosted by Jim Dees<\/strong> and house band, The Yalobushwhacker Big Band<\/strong> with the Thacker Horns<\/strong> and vocalist Mary Frances Massey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Powerhouse Arts Center is located at 413 S. 14th Street<\/strong>, in Oxford, across from Newk’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doors open at 5:30 pm for refreshments with the radio show at 6 pm and the afterparty at 7 pm. Tickets for the after party are $20 and are available at the door or online at: https:\/\/oxf<\/a>ordarts.com\/deltarising<\/a>. Patrons can donate an extra $5 to benefit Thacker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Author Tom Piazza\u2019s new novel is The Auburn Conference<\/strong><\/em>. The book imagines a literary conference in 1883 with attendees such as Mark Twain<\/strong>, Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/strong>, Walt Whitman<\/strong>, and Herman Melville<\/strong>. Kirkus Reviews<\/strong><\/em> said the book is \u201c\u2026an intriguing mix of humor and underlying seriousness that makes for an engaging change of pace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gospel rockers The Staples Jr. Singers (no relation to Mavis Staples & The Staples Singers) are one of the more intriguing stories in pop music. They released their only album, When Do We Get Paid<\/strong><\/em>, in 1975 when they were teenagers in Aberdeen<\/strong>, Mississippi. The album was forgotten until 2023 when it was reissued by David Byrne<\/strong>\u2019s world beat record label, Luaka Bop<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Staples, Jr. Singers now find themselves playing sold out theatres throughout Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharde Thomas is the granddaughter of the late fife master Otha Turner<\/strong>. She will present a scaled-down version of her usual Rising Stars Fife & Drum<\/strong> Band that features just Thomas on fife and vocals and Chris Mallory<\/strong> on bass drum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cTaste of the Delta\u201d event at 7 pm will feature soul food chef Michael Banks<\/strong> and BBQ pitmaster James Butler<\/strong> with cuisine and cocktails by Georgia Abraham<\/strong>, artwork by Bill Abel<\/strong>, and live music by Blue Mother Tupelo<\/strong>, Rising Stars, and John Mohead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour will hit the road this summer for a series of shows before returning to Oxford for its fall season. The first show of fall is scheduled for Thursday, September 7<\/strong> at 6 pm at The Graduate Hotel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
