Jackson, Miss. (RPM) \u2013 Two of Mississippi\u2019s longest running and most respected Rock bands will be featured on Mississippi Public Broadcasting<\/b>\u2019s new television show Oxford Sounds<\/i><\/b> on Thursday, March 27, 2014<\/b> at 9 pm on PBS TV<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The show features renowned\u00a0 Mississippi musicians George McConnell <\/b>and The Cooters<\/b>, playing hit songs live in the studio with interviews, anecdotes, and behind the scenes footage.<\/span><\/p>\n

George McConnell<\/b> is a Vicksburg native who relocated to Oxford and formed the popular band Beanland<\/b> in the mid-1980s, with Keyboardist John \u201cJo-Jo\u201d Herman<\/b>. Both McConnell and Herman later became members of the internationally beloved jam-band, Widespread Panic<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

McConnell abruptly left Widespread Panic in 2006 and eventually formed The Nonchalants,<\/b> with bassist Tommy Turan <\/b>of Laurel, drummer Kenny Graeber <\/b>of Yazoo City, and Oxford guitarist Max Williams<\/b>. The Nonchalants released two albums and several singles to national acclaim, and toured the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Oxford Sounds\u2019 is the best of both worlds,\u201d said George. \u201cYou\u2019ll get to see great musicians in the studio, recording live, having a good time, without distractions, and making music that will last a lifetime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Joining George McConnell in this Oxford Sounds <\/i>episode is one of Mississippi\u2019s longest running bands, The Cooters<\/b>. Now approaching their 20thanniversary, the Oxford-based group has released dozens of albums and singles, and they\u2019ve toured the country many times over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grammy nominated record label T-Bones Records<\/b> of Hattiesburg discovered The Cooters<\/b> and released the band\u2019s second album The Moon Will Rise Again<\/i> to international critical acclaim.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cooters released several more records on Profane Existence<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, The Cooters had award winning media, trademark lawsuits, incarceration, and plenty of controversy with music and art.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through adversity, The Cooters transitioned from a local Punk band into a RocknRoll institution, becoming one of our state\u2019s most talked about groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cooters features Oxford, Mississippi natives: Newt Rayburn<\/b> on bass guitar and vocals, Gentry Webb<\/b> on guitar, and Mikey Namorato<\/b> on drums.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oxford Sounds<\/i> is the project of Marie Antoon, <\/b>former Executive Director of Mississippi Public Broadcasting.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Partnering with the Ole Miss<\/b>\u2019 Journalism School, Antoon produced the show with help from students and local filmographers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music in this episode was recorded by Producer Winn McElroy<\/b> of Clarksdale, and filmed at Black Wings Studio<\/b> near Water Valley, Mississippi. Thacker Mountain Radio<\/b> host Jim Dees<\/b> is the narrator of the program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oxford Sounds <\/i>featuring The Cooters with George McConnell & The Nonchalants will debut at 9 pm <\/b>on Thursday, March 27, 2014<\/b>. The show repeats at 10 pm<\/b> on Sunday, March 30, 2014<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
