{"id":127850,"date":"2023-04-08T10:20:18","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T15:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=127850"},"modified":"2023-04-08T10:20:21","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T15:20:21","slug":"neuroscientist-set-as-speaker-for-brain-awareness-week-at-ole-miss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/neuroscientist-set-as-speaker-for-brain-awareness-week-at-ole-miss\/","title":{"rendered":"Neuroscientist Set as Speaker for Brain Awareness Week at Ole Miss"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Javier Gonzalez Maeso to examine effects of psychedelics and their therapeutic potential<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally renowned neuroscientist <strong>Javier Gonzalez Maeso<\/strong> will discuss the effects of psychedelics on the mind as part of <strong>Brain Awareness Week<\/strong>, set for April 11-13, 2023 at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The professor of physiology and biophysics at <strong>Virginia Commonwealth University<\/strong> will address the topic during the <strong>Oxford Neuroscience Cafe<\/strong> at 6 pm Tuesday, April 11 at the <strong>Heartbreak Coffee Shop<\/strong> and again during a lecture at 3 pm Wednesday, April 12 in <strong>Brevard Hall<\/strong>, Room 134.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The main characteristic of Brain Awareness Week events is that they are thought for nonacademic audiences,&#8221; said <strong>Alberto Del Arco<\/strong>, UM associate professor of health, exercise science and recreation management and coordinator of the week&#8217;s activities. &#8220;Everyone, regardless of their background, will enjoy and learn about what are these drugs and how they are helping us to better understand the brain and ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonz\u00e1lez Maeso earned two bachelor&#8217;s degrees in biology and in biochemistry and molecular biology at the <strong>University of the Basque Country<\/strong> in <strong>Bilbao, Spain<\/strong>. He continued there as a doctoral student, narrowing his research interest on neurotransmitter receptors in the human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He completed his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of <strong>Stuart Sealfon<\/strong> at <strong>Mount Sinai School of Medicine<\/strong> in <strong>New York<\/strong>, where he proposed a molecular mechanism by which psychedelics, such as LSD or psilocybin, induce their unique behavioral effects in mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Psychedelics are currently a focus of intensive research due to their recently discovered therapeutic potential,&#8221; Gonzalez Maeso said. &#8220;New studies suggest that the subjective effects of psychedelics are necessary for their therapeutic effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The question is how transient alterations of brain function and behavior can improve the symptoms of psychiatric disorders such as depression.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A graduate and undergraduate research poster competition is set for 11 am-4 pm. Thursday, April 13 in <strong>Bryant Hall<\/strong>, Room 200. Short talks will be also presented by <strong>Eric J. Vallender<\/strong>, director of the neuroscience graduate program at the <strong>University of Mississippi Medical Center<\/strong>; <strong>Barbara Gisabella<\/strong>, assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at UMMC; and <strong>Harry Pantazopolous<\/strong>, director of the <strong>Medical Center&#8217;s Postmortem Brain Core<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Each year we have had this showcase, our students presented research of exceptional quality,&#8221; said <strong>Lainy Day<\/strong>, associate professor of biology, director of the neuroscience minor and event coordinator. &#8220;This year&#8217;s showcase promises to be the best one yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gisabella will also speak at 2 pm Friday, April 14 on &#8220;Regulation of Emotional Memory in Psychiatric Disorders.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All events are open to the public. The annual program is sponsored by the <strong>School of Applied Sciences, Graduate School, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs<\/strong>, and <strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brain Awareness Week is a global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research.
