One event helped change all that. This April, the world will descend on a downtown filled with old friends and new businesses, small-town hospitality, and the biggest <strong>Juke Joint Festival<\/strong> yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you celebrate 20 years of blues music, community development, and downtown revitalization?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s Juke Joint Festival may well be the biggest music event ever held here,\u201d said artistic director <strong>Roger Stolle<\/strong>. \u201cTo celebrate Clarksdale\u2019s two decades of growth based on blues and cultural tourism, our 20th Juke Joint Festival will feature over a hundred performances on 17 daytime stages and inside 26 nighttime venues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Juke Joint Festival is Saturday, April 15, with related events held Thursday through Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saturday daytime free; night requires wristband<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the daytime on Saturday, April 15, visitors and locals alike will enjoy eight blocks of music stages, arts &amp; crafts vendors, Southern street food, racing pigs, a petting zoo, and monkeys riding dogs. The daytime music stages are all free. Saturday\u2019s nighttime music venues require an official Juke Joint Festival wristband. Wristband quantities are limited, and all sales are final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe offer over 80 Saturday performances for free during the daytime, but attendees need to buy a wristband to enjoy the 30-some acts in over two-dozen venues at night,\u201d said festival director <strong>Nan Hughes<\/strong>. \u201cWe hope to have another wristband sellout, so we recommend that folks buy pre-sale now at jukejointfestival.com.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Saturday-night wristbands remain on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the festival week, they will be sold in-person at a price to be determined. The official festival headquarters for merchandise sales and wristband information is at <strong>243 Delta Avenue<\/strong>, downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spread over 17 stages, daytime music starts around 10 am and includes acts like <strong>Jimmy \u201cDuck\u201d Holmes<\/strong>, <strong>\u201cLittle\u201d Joe Ayers<\/strong>, <strong>Duwayne Burnside<\/strong>, <strong>Lightnin\u2019 Malcolm<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Australia \u201cHoney Bee\u201d Jones<\/strong>, and many more. The festival\u2019s 26 nighttime wristband venues include <strong>Ground Zero Blues Club<\/strong>, <strong>Red\u2019s Lounge<\/strong>, <strong>New Roxy<\/strong>, <strong>Bad Apple Blues Club<\/strong>, <strong>Messenger\u2019s<\/strong>, <strong>Bluesberry Cafe<\/strong>, <strong>Hambone<\/strong>, and others with acts like <strong>Reverend Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band<\/strong>, <strong>Kent Burnside<\/strong>, <strong>Terry \u201cBig T\u201d Williams<\/strong>, <strong>Watermelon Slim<\/strong>, <strong>Anthony \u201cBig A\u201d Sherrod<\/strong>, <strong>Keith Johnson<\/strong>, <strong>Jimbo Mathus<\/strong>, <strong>Garry Burnside<\/strong>, <strong>Kenny Brown<\/strong>, and many more. Details online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20th anniversary celebration runs Thursday\u2013Sunday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarksdale\u2019s massive 20th Juke Joint Festival celebration officially starts with a Thursday 5\u20138 pm kick-off inside the <strong>New Roxy Theater<\/strong> (described as \u201cquite possibly the coolest venue in the South\u201d) with free performances by <strong>Sean \u201cBad\u201d Apple<\/strong> and <strong>Lucious Spiller Band<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, following a day of intimate music performances and panel discussions downtown, the <strong>Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area<\/strong> presents a special festival edition of the world-famous <strong>Thacker Mountain Radio Hour<\/strong> at the New Roxy\u2014starring host <strong>Jim Dees<\/strong> along with author <strong>Robert Mugge<\/strong> (<strong><em>Notes from the Road<\/em><\/strong>), one-man blues band <strong>Rip Lee Pryor<\/strong> and Clarksdale\u2019s own high-energy <strong>Super Chikan &amp; the Fighting Cocks<\/strong>. The live, in-person event is free to the public (first come, first served) from 6\u20137 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, after a Saturday of great music and community events running from 10 am till after midnight, Sunday keeps the celebration rolling with related events such as the <strong>Cat Head Mini Blues Fest<\/strong>, <strong>Bluesberry Backyard Blues Fest<\/strong>, <strong>Red\u2019s Post-JJF Blues Jam<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JJF non-profit thanks its supporters\u2014big and small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Major 2023 Juke Joint Festival partners include
