{"id":127772,"date":"2023-04-06T08:09:41","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T13:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=127772"},"modified":"2023-04-06T08:09:44","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T13:09:44","slug":"the-ole-miss-chapter-of-active-minds-seeking-to-curb-suicides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/the-ole-miss-chapter-of-active-minds-seeking-to-curb-suicides\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ole Miss Chapter of Active Minds Seeking to Curb Suicides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Student-led University of Mississippi group sponsors week promoting the importance of mental health<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> student organization is planning a week of special events, beginning Tuesday, April 11, 2023, focused on suicide awareness and prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> chapter of <strong>Active Minds<\/strong> hosts a <strong>Mental Health Week<\/strong> every year. Among other things, the organization hopes to open up conservations around mental health issues, destigmatize these issues and make people aware of resources available if they need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheduled events during the week include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>April 11: Narcan training, 4:45-6:15 p.m., Ole Miss Student Union, Room 323<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April 12: Mental Health Good Bags distribution, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Ole Miss Plaza<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April 13: Birdhouse painting, 11 a.m.-noon, University Museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April 13: Pilates class, 4:30 p.m., Grove Stage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s programming is designed to raise awareness about the incidence and impact of suicide, connect students to needed mental health resources and inspire action for suicide prevention, said <strong>Edith-Marie Green<\/strong>, a senior international studies major from <strong>Oxford <\/strong>and co-coordinator for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want students to know that they are not alone in their struggles and that there are resources available,&#8221; Green said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green&#8217;s co-coordinator,\u00a0<strong>Alex Bush<\/strong>, a senior psychology major from Denver, said that members of the chapter evaluate its goals depending on each situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Going into this year, one of our main goals was to think outside of the box and try new things, even if it doesn&#8217;t end up going the way we planned,&#8221; Bush said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve had some of our new changes turn out great, while others definitely need improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Altogether, the organization is constantly evolving. I cannot wait to see what goals they accomplish in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Active Minds was founded in 2003 by <strong>Alison Malmon<\/strong>, who was a junior at the <strong>University of Pennsylvania<\/strong>.
