Based on a Civil War drama, <em>The Crisis<\/em>, written by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winston_Churchill_(novelist)\" target=\"_blank\">American novelist <strong>Winston Churchill<\/strong><\/a>, the 1916 film was the second to be recorded in <strong>Mississippi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DamienDameinWash.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DamienDameinWash.jpg?resize=394%2C334\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12673\" width=\"394\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DamienDameinWash.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DamienDameinWash.jpg?resize=300%2C254&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Local composer <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dameinwash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Damein Wash<\/a><\/strong> has written a score for the black and white silent picture, bringing vintage into the contemporary and making use of musicians from around the state including <strong>Emory Booth<\/strong> (clarinet); <strong>Doug Thomas<\/strong> (flute and saxophone); <strong>Daniel Roebuck<\/strong> (trumpet); <strong>Dr. Michael Worthy<\/strong> (trombone); <strong>Jiwon Lee<\/strong> (violin); <strong>Linna Zheng<\/strong> (flute and violin);<strong> Dave Woolworth<\/strong> (bass); <strong>Amanda Johnston<\/strong> (piano); and <strong>Ricky Burkhead<\/strong> (percussion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/the-crisis-crop.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"230\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/the-crisis-crop.jpg?resize=230%2C345\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-126964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/the-crisis-crop.jpg?w=230&amp;ssl=1 230w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/the-crisis-crop.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The film tells the tale of Stephen Brice, a young lawyer in Civil War-era St. Louis, falls in love with Virginia Carvel, the daughter of his benefactor. But she is loyal to the South and Brice is committed to Lincoln\u2019s cause. In the course of the war, their convictions separate them, and Virginia becomes engaged to her cousin Clarence Colfax, a Confederate officer. Brice becomes an officer under General Sherman, and eventually finds himself faced with the captured Colfax, facing execution for spying.
