{"id":126796,"date":"2023-02-24T15:02:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=126796"},"modified":"2023-02-24T15:02:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:02:15","slug":"speakers-to-discuss-race-racelessness-and-building-community-at-the-university-of-mississippi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/speakers-to-discuss-race-racelessness-and-building-community-at-the-university-of-mississippi\/","title":{"rendered":"Speakers to Discuss Race, Racelessness, and Building Community at the University of Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Professor, campus center bring &#8216;new thoughts&#8217; to Ole Miss<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two speakers will discuss their modern views on race and racelessness next month at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> during a panel aimed at provoking thought on society&#8217;s relationship with identity markers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adam Gussow<\/strong>, professor of English and Southern studies, will moderate &#8220;New Thoughts on Race, Antiracism and the Dream of Beloved Community&#8221; at 5:30 pm March 6 in Bryant Hall, Room 209. Sponsored by the university&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Declaration of Independence Center for the Study of American Freedom<\/strong>, the program is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Erec Smith<\/strong>, professor of rhetoric and composition at <strong>York College of Pennsylvania<\/strong>, and the <strong>Rev. Starlette Thomas<\/strong>, author, activist and director of the <strong>Raceless Gospel Initiative<\/strong> at <strong>Good Faith Media<\/strong>, will speak on society&#8217;s relationship with the idea of race as an identity marker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gussow envisioned the event after reading and hearing the work of the speakers. He said he wants to encourage new ideas on campus and to expose students, professors and other attendees to different viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want us to have a deeper and more nuanced concept of race and our attachments to race,&#8221; Gussow said. &#8220;I hope people see that we should do these things to espouse different ways of thinking. Let&#8217;s hear these new thoughts. Let&#8217;s think in new ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gussow said he wanted to introduce the aspect of &#8220;beloved community&#8221; to the event, which is a reference to\u00a0<strong>Rev.
