{"id":126644,"date":"2023-02-22T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=126644"},"modified":"2023-02-22T11:59:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T17:59:08","slug":"william-winter-scholars-represent-um-at-natchez-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/william-winter-scholars-represent-um-at-natchez-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"William Winter Scholars Represent University of Mississippi at Natchez Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Annual conference highlights state&#8217;s literature, history, film and culture<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>University of Mississippi <\/strong>professor and student will be recognized and another professor will give a presentation during the 34th annual\u00a0<strong>Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration<\/strong>.<br><br><strong>Latrice Johnson<\/strong>, a master&#8217;s student in <strong>English <\/strong>and gender studies from <strong>Oklahoma City<\/strong>, and <strong>Eva Payne<\/strong>, an assistant professor of history, will be named\u00a02023 <strong>William Winter<\/strong> scholars during the event, which takes place February 23-24, 2023. <strong>Jodi Skipper<\/strong>, associate professor of anthropology and Southern studies, will take part in a panel discussion on &#8220;Changing the Narrative and Telling a More Complete Story.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by <strong>Copiah-Lincoln Community College<\/strong>, the celebration is known as &#8220;Mississippi&#8217;s most significant annual conference devoted to literature, history, film and culture.&#8221; Each year, one student and one faculty member from each university is recognized as a William Winter scholar, in honor of the former governor known for his contributions to education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>John Smartt Summer Scholar<\/strong> for the <strong>Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions<\/strong>, Johnson wrote an entry on the\u00a0murder of <strong>James Craig Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0for UM&#8217;s award-winning <strong>Mississippi Encyclopedia<\/strong> and is writing the book chapter &#8220;Depictions of the (Black) Southern Belle on Reality Television&#8221; for &#8220;The Living Legacy of African American Studies: Its Past, Present, and Future(s)&#8221; at <strong>University of Georgia Press<\/strong>. In 2022, she presented &#8220;#BlackInTheIvory: On Being Black in Higher Education&#8221; at the UM Forum on Race and Ethnicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I look forward to learning from and networking with outstanding humanities scholars from across the state,&#8221; Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Payne, a historian of the 19th- and 20th-century <strong>United States<\/strong> with a focus on gender and sexuality, co-directs\u00a0<strong>Invisible Histories Project Mississippi<\/strong>, a <strong>Mellon Foundation<\/strong>-funded project documenting and preserving the state&#8217;s <strong>LGBTQ+<\/strong> history through oral histories and archival collecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Payne acknowledged the honor of being selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The program is full of fascinating scholars, writers and filmmakers, and I&#8217;m particularly excited to attend my UM colleague Dr. Jodi Skipper&#8217;s panel,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skipper is the\u00a0author of &#8220;Behind the Big House: Reconciling Slavery, Race and Heritage in the U.S. South&#8221;(<strong>University of Iowa Press<\/strong>, 2022). Joining her on the panel discussion is <strong>Elizabeth Brownyn Boyd<\/strong>, author of &#8220;Southern Beauty, Race, Ritual and Memory in the Modern South&#8221; (University of Georgia Press, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they will discuss Mississippi&#8217;s cultural heritage tourism and the difficulties and possibilities of presenting the history of slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donald Dyer<\/strong>, associate dean for faculty and academic affairs for the\u00a0<strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong>\u00a0and distinguished professor of modern languages, encourages faculty, staff and alumni to join the university&#8217;s representatives at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This year&#8217;s Natchez Celebration looks to be, once again, an exciting and important gathering of students, faculty and scholars interested in literature, history and film,&#8221; Dyer said. &#8220;The College of Liberal Arts is proud to send Dr. Payne and Ms. Johnson as representatives from our university. They were selected enthusiastically by a committee of faculty and staff to participate in the conference.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free and open to the public, the two-day event is slated at the <strong>Natchez Convention Center<\/strong>.
