{"id":126275,"date":"2023-02-09T09:55:44","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T15:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=126275"},"modified":"2023-02-09T09:55:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T15:55:46","slug":"local-pediatrician-leads-states-american-academy-of-pediatrics-chapter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/local-pediatrician-leads-states-american-academy-of-pediatrics-chapter\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Pediatrician Leads State\u2019s American Academy of Pediatrics Chapter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the physician owner of <strong>Lafayette Pediatric Clinic<\/strong> in <strong>Oxford<\/strong>, Dr. <strong>Tanya Fitts<\/strong> has been advocating for children and teens in <strong>North Mississippi<\/strong> for nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a calling that drives her in and out of the clinic, whether she\u2019s starting a program to ensure that every child can get the care they need \u2014 regardless of their ability to pay \u2014 or by serving on the board of the <strong>Lafayette County Literacy Council<\/strong>, working to ensure that every child has the writing, reading and comprehension skills they need to build a quality life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiving children the care they need starts with their physical and mental health,\u201d said Dr. Fitts. \u201cBut it must also include fighting for and serving their needs through efforts that provide economic, educational and community support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is now taking those advocacy efforts statewide as she begins her tenure as president of the <strong>Mississippi Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/strong> (<strong>MSAAP<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to serve as president of the MSAAP,\u201d said Dr. Fitts. \u201cWe are dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of all children in Mississippi, and what can be a more important mission than that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MSAAP represents more than 325 <strong>Mississippi <\/strong>pediatricians, including primary care providers and subspecialists, residents and medical students. It\u2019s one of the 66 autonomous yet affiliated chapters of the <strong>American Academy of Pediatrics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of the year, Dr. Fitts says she will work with her colleagues in the MSAAP on several key initiatives, including increasing funding for early learning collaboration, addressing race-based healthcare disparities, expanding autism support and extending Medicaid coverage for pregnant women through 12 months postpartum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many issues and initiatives that we can make strides on to improve the wellbeing of Mississippi\u2019s children and families,\u201d said Dr. Fitts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As president, Dr. Fitts will also be responsible for advocating for her colleagues as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must advocate for our profession on a statewide level,\u201d she said. \u201cThat means representing the voices of pediatricians in legislative sessions and working with state leaders and our fellow specialty groups to drive change on issues such as reimbursement parity in the telehealth space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;member of MSAAP since 1999, Dr. Fitts has previously served on the organization\u2019s continuing education committee and as the chapter\u2019s coordinator for <strong>Community Access to Child Health<\/strong> grants, which enable physicians and residents to launch projects that increase access to healthcare for children in underserved communities.
