{"id":126188,"date":"2023-02-06T11:43:55","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T17:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=126188"},"modified":"2023-02-08T20:42:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T02:42:25","slug":"nathan-hodges-jr-memorial-highway-dedication-held-in-oxford-on-highway-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/nathan-hodges-jr-memorial-highway-dedication-held-in-oxford-on-highway-30\/","title":{"rendered":"Nathan Hodges Jr. Memorial Highway Dedication held in Oxford on Highway 30"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>A section of Highway 30 in the City Limits of Oxford dedicated to Civil Rights leader<\/em> <em>and funeral home director<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, January 30, 2023, <strong>Lafayette County<\/strong> and <strong>Oxford, Mississippi <\/strong>elected officials, along with members of the <strong>Nathan Hodges, Jr.<\/strong> family, dedicated a section of <strong>State Route 30<\/strong> in his honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>2022 Legislative Session<\/strong>, <strong>Senate Bill No. 2481<\/strong> was signed into law, designating a segment of State Route 30 located in the corporate limits of Oxford beginning at the bridge passing over <strong>State Route 7<\/strong> and extending east to the <strong>County Road 207<\/strong> is designated and shall be known at the \u201cNathan Hodges, Jr. Memorial Highway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan Hodges, Jr. was born January 30, 1924, in <strong>Meridian <\/strong>to the late <strong>Nathan <\/strong>and <strong>Carrie Wilson Hodges<\/strong>. After graduating from <strong>Harris High School<\/strong>, he enlisted in the <strong>United States Army<\/strong> in 1942 and served in <strong>World War II<\/strong>. He received a medical discharge in 1945 and returned home to Meridian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After returning home, Nathan became very active in the civil rights movement and started an organization which he named the <strong>Veteran\u2019s Club<\/strong>. This very organization would later become known as the <strong>National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/strong> (N.A.A.C.P.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He settled his family in Oxford and became a pillar in the Lafayette County community and its surrounding areas.
