The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour <\/strong>returns to live performances on Thursday, February 2, at 6 pm<\/strong> at the Powerhouse Arts Center<\/strong>. The season premiere will feature author De\u2019Shawn Charles Winslow<\/strong>, winner of the Willie Morris Award for Southern fiction, plus songwriters Rod Smoth<\/strong> and Amara Nicole<\/strong>. Admission is free and the public is invited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show is hosted by Jim Dees<\/strong>, and the season opener will feature the Yalobushwhacker Big Band<\/strong> with the Thacker Horns<\/strong> and guest vocalist, Mary Frances Massey<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The season opener will also feature a set by Rod Smoth and a reading by Winslow from his murder mystery, Decent People<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Publisher\u2019s Weekly<\/em> said the book has \u201cstrong characters, impeccable prose, and brisk pacing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2023 spring schedule runs every Thursday (except spring break, March 16) through the season finale on April 27. Other highlights include a rooftop show (weather permitting) at the Graduate Hotel<\/strong> (February 23) and the Oxford Film Festival <\/strong>show at The Lyric<\/strong> with Saturday Night Live<\/em> <\/strong>screenwriter, David Sheffield<\/strong> (March 2). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show will perform live on Saturday, March 4 at 3 pm in Cleveland, Miss. on the campus of Delta State University<\/strong> to celebrate the Duff Dorrough Scholarship Fund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oxford Book Conference<\/strong> show with drummer-turned-author Nic Brown <\/strong>and songwriter Charlie Parr <\/strong>at the Lyric is set for March 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other dates of note include author Jeannette Walls<\/strong> (April 6); Cold Mountain<\/em> <\/strong>author, Charles Frazier<\/strong>, with his new novel, The Trackers<\/strong><\/em> (April 13); and the season finale on Thursday, April 27 at the Lyric with Mississippi gospel groovers, The Staples Jr. Singers<\/strong>. The group recently signed with Talking Heads<\/strong> front man, David Byrne<\/strong>\u2019s Luaka Bop record label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tim Lee<\/strong>, Thacker\u2019s production director, looks forward to the show\u2019s eclectic musical line-up, including the Staples Jr. Singers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cThe Staples Jr. Singers are coming off a European tour,\u201d he notes. \u201cThey\u2019ve got this crazy late-life-career going and they haven\u2019t toured since they were teenagers in Aberdeen, Mississippi, forty years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m also excited about LaDonna Smith on the show at the Graduate,\u201d Lee continues. \u201cShe\u2019s an improvisational violinist. We have good ole Webb Wilder on April 20 and New Orleans rapper Alfred Banks will join the Staples Jr. Singers on the April 27 show. That will be a cool way to kick off Double Decker weekend.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thacker executive director Katelyn O\u2019Brien<\/strong> is excited for the new season and notes the show has a new affiliate, WUOT, 91.9 FM in Knoxville, TN. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have more listeners than ever, an exciting season planned, and some surprises too,\u201d she hints. \u201cWe look forward to seeing everybody!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
