A female police officer with the Oxford Police Department<\/strong> has been nominated for a national award for heroism after saving a choking baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officer Atziri Ortiz<\/strong> is seen in the video at the bottom of this story flipping the baby onto his stomach, while lightly hitting his back, dislodging an object that was causing him to choke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That act of heroism happened September 15, 2022 in Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong>, and now her department has nominated Ortiz for the 2023 RISE Award<\/strong>, while asking the public to vote for her.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three first responders across the nation will win the annual award, presented by Axon<\/strong>, the company that manufactures the Taser <\/strong>device. Each recipient will win $1,000, a trophy, and a trip to the award ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its nomination, OPD wrote, \u201cOfficer Ortiz remained calm in the face of panic and uncertainty and relied on her training to help save this child\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
