Herrod Still Holds Multiple Defensive Records at Ole Miss<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Former Ole Miss<\/strong> gridiron standout Jeff Herrod<\/strong> has been selected as a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame<\/strong> class of 2023, the organization announced Wednesday.
 
Herrod led the Rebels <\/strong>in tackles three of his four years as a starter. He still holds the single-game record for tackles (28) and the single-season mark for tackles (168) in Ole Miss history. He is also the all-time leader in tackles at Ole Miss with 528 and the second all-time leading tackler in SEC <\/strong>history.
 
The Birmingham, Alabama<\/strong>, native was a first team All-SEC<\/strong> pick by the league coaches in 1986 and a second team AP pick in both 1986 and 1987. He also garnered third team All-America<\/strong> honors. Following his senior season, he was defensive captain in the 1988 Senior Bowl<\/strong> and Defensive MVP<\/strong> of the Blue-Gray Game<\/strong>.
 
Herrod played 11 years in the NFL, 10 with the Indianapolis Colts<\/strong> and one with the Philadelphia Eagles<\/strong>. He led the Colts in tackles for seven seasons and finished as the franchise’s all-time leader in tackles with 1,347. His 200 tackles in a season was the most until 2012. He was named Defensive Player of Year<\/strong> three times (1989, 1990, and 1992), and the Colts named him their MVP <\/strong>in 1991.
 
In 1998 he received the NFL <\/strong>prestigious Ed Block Courage Award<\/strong> from the Colts for overcoming adversity on and off the field. In 1993 he was selected as a member of the Ole Miss Team of the Century<\/strong>. He was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame<\/strong> in 2001 and chosen as an SEC Football Legend<\/strong> in 2013.
 
Other inductees included in the 2023 class are Mississippi State<\/strong> baseball player Paul Mahold<\/strong>, Alabama <\/strong>football player John Mangum<\/strong>, Millsaps <\/strong>baseball coach Jim Page<\/strong>, former Ole Miss student and Olympic marksman Tony Rosetti<\/strong>, Ole Miss women’s basketball player Carol Ross<\/strong>, Southern Miss<\/strong> football player Patrick Surtain<\/strong>, and Jackson State<\/strong> football player Lewis Tillman<\/strong>.
 
This 2023 class will be formally enshrined next summer during the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend<\/strong>, presented by Wayne Sanderson Farms<\/strong> and the Sanderson Farms Championship<\/strong>, on July 28 \u2013 29, 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
