Admission is free and the public is invited. Guests for the show will include the 2022\u201323 Grisham-Writer-in-Residence, <strong>Deesha Philyaw<\/strong>, Oxford synth-pop duo<strong> And the Echo<\/strong>, and the <strong>Southern Komfort Brass Band<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program will be hosted by <strong>Jim Dees<\/strong> and an expanded <strong>Yalobushwhacker Big Band<\/strong> featuring the <strong>Thacker Horns<\/strong> and guest vocalist <strong>Mary Frances Massey<\/strong>. Dees promises a \u201cbig brass blowout.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike any good party we\u2019ll have great music and maybe a surprise or two,\u201d he hints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An after party with food and refreshments featuring the Southern Komfort Brass Band will follow the radio show at 7 pm. The Powerhouse is located at 413 S. 14th Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philyaw is the author of the short story collection <strong><em>The Secret Lives of Church Ladies<\/em><\/strong> (West Virginia University Press, 2020), which won the 2021 PEN\/Faulkner Award for Fiction. It was also a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Echo are an electronica-pop duo made up of longtime Oxford favorites, <strong>Morgan Pennington<\/strong> and <strong>Winn McElroy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Southern Komfort Brass Band are from Jackson, Mississippi, and bring high energy\u2014and a half-dozen horns, plus drums\u2014to their funky take on blues, jazz, R&amp;B, and gospel as well as Komfort originals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour was founded on October 15, 1997 by former Oxford musicians <strong>Caroline Herring<\/strong> and <strong>Bryan Ledfor<\/strong>d, and <strong>Square Books<\/strong> co-owner<strong> Richard Howorth<\/strong>, who also named the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests on the inaugural show were author <strong>John Bentley Mays<\/strong> and musician <strong>Tony Furtado<\/strong>. Early shows featured an author reading and music by a visiting band as well as songs by the house band, a format that continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show now broadcasts some 30 shows a year, 12 in the spring and 12 in the fall as well as half-dozen road shows in various cities across the Southeast United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show can be heard Thursdays at 6 pm on <strong>WUMS (92.1 FM) \u2013 University of Mississippi<\/strong>. It can also be heard every Saturday at 7 pm on <strong>Mississippi Public Broadcasting<\/strong> and 9 pm on <strong>Alabama Public Radio<\/strong>; 3 pm (ET) on <strong>WUTC \u2013 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga<\/strong> and Fridays at 6 am on <strong>WYXR \u2013 Memphis Public Radio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2005, Thacker Mountain Radio Hour received the Mississippi Governor\u2019s Award for Broadcast Excellence.
