Outside stately Bryant Hall<\/strong><\/a> on a balmy day in early autumn, teachers, and students from the University of Mississippi Classics Department<\/strong> (plus a few interested visitors) munched on foods much like those enjoyed by ancient Greeks <\/strong>and Romans<\/strong>. As an additional delight, there was a birthday cake for Annabelle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, excerpts of works by Caesar, Catullus, Homer, Horace, Juvenal, Ovid, Propertius, Statius, Virgil<\/strong>, and even Tennyson <\/strong>were being read aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Molly Pasco-Pranger<\/strong> led off with a stirring rendition (first in Latin<\/strong>, then in English <\/strong>translation) of Cicero<\/strong>\u2019s oration in favor of granting Roman <\/strong>citizenship to the poet Archias<\/a>. Cicero declaims, in part, \u201c… nothing in life is really worth having except moral decency and reputable behaviour\u00a0 \u2026. The whole of literature, philosophy, and history is full of examples which teach this lesson \u2014 but would have been plunged in utter darkness if the written word had not been available to illuminate them.\u201d Cicero also notes that literature is an inspiration for the young \u2014 and a consolation for the old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that we were engaged for more than two hours of reading excerpts from literary works thousands of years old attests to Cicero\u2019s insight and foresight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
