A new photographic book, Ole Miss: 2022 Baseball National Champions<\/em><\/strong> (Nautilus<\/strong>; $48), debuted on October 1, 2022. The oversized, 160-page book chronicles the Rebels<\/strong>\u2019 unlikely and dramatic path to the national title, featuring 200+ stunning photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book\u2019s publication has its own dramatic storyline. Neil White<\/strong>, creative director and publisher at The Nautilus Publishing Company<\/strong> said, \u201cThe turnaround time to produce this product was unparalleled\u2014in the best of times. Considering paper shortages, a tight labor market, and book manufacturing backlogs, getting this book in the hands of readers three months after the championship game was nothing short of another miraculous team effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not Jinxing the Run<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Anticipating the win, White and his team at Nautilus had prepared a proposal to publish a commemorative College World Series book, but \u201cwe didn\u2019t dare send it to Ole Miss Athletics until the final strikeout,\u201d White said. \u201cI had an email crafted to Ole Miss Athletics Director Keith Carter and Ole Miss Athletics Foundation CEO Denson Hollis. The proposal was attached. I had my laptop open, email drafted, and curser floating over the \u2018send\u2019 button. After the final pitch, as the Rebel players poured onto the field in Omaha for a final dog pile, I sent the email.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20,000+ Images; A Hollywood Narrative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Carter and Hollis both agreed it would be a perfect way to commemorate the historic baseball season, so White gathered a team of writers that included veteran sports reporter Jeff Roberson<\/strong>. Then, Nautilus partnered with Ole Miss Athletics Photographer Josh McCoy<\/strong> and Associate Athletics Director for Sports Production and Creative Services Micah Ginn<\/strong>. In a matter of three weeks, the team curated more than 20,000 images to narrow the photographs to the 200 best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Ole Miss sports photography team, led by Josh McCoy, is the most talented in the country,\u201d White said. \u201cWe\u2019ve published dozens of photography books, but this one\u2014not a chronicle of nature, architecture, or the arts, but baseball\u2014has some of the most striking images we\u2019ve ever reproduced.\u201d
Roberson and his team of writers captured the \u201cHollywood\u201d narrative arc of the season with precision and accuracy\u2014all within the three-week deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even members of the Ole Miss Baseball squad pitched in to make the book a collector\u2019s item. Tim Elko<\/strong>, who was prepping for his major league career, took the time to write a foreword to the book. And Coach Mike Bianco<\/strong> crafted an essay entitled, \u201cA Different Path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battling for Press Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nautilus, in spite of paper and labor shortages, was able to secure a slot in the press queue. But there was no margin for error. \u201cWe had a 24-hour window in late August to upload the book to the printer in order to get on press. The book had to be completely finished\u2014with no room for deadline extensions,\u201d White said. \u201cIt was an unprecedented effort among the Ole Miss Athletics staff, photographers, writers, designers, copyeditors, and manufacturers.\u201d Those combined efforts made the book available for the holiday season a mere three months after the final victory in Omaha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxford Signing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Coach Bianco and team captain Tim Elko will be signing copies at Off Square Books<\/strong> in Oxford<\/strong> at 11 am on Friday, October 14, 2022<\/strong>. They will only be signing books purchased from Square Books. No memorabilia will be signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
