R.L. Boyce plays at 6:30 pm on Friday, October 7 with Lightnin’ Malcolm.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

R.L.\u2019s music is part of the Hill Country<\/strong> tradition of long, looping blues, often based on one or two chords. It\u2019s a tradition made popular by Junior Kimbrough<\/strong> and R.L. Burnside<\/strong>. It\u2019s mostly played on electric guitar and often with a slide, although Boyce uses his fingers. It has been said that Hill Country bluesmen are less concerned with getting it right than getting it goin\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boyce learned by sneaking into all night parties and goat roasts in the areas to hear the masters like Burnside and Fred McDowell<\/strong>. When he was 15, Boyce started as a musician playing drums with Otha Turner<\/strong> and the Rising Sun Fife & Drum Band<\/strong>, the most traditional and African<\/strong> style of the Hill Country repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
