{"id":122524,"date":"2022-09-08T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=122524"},"modified":"2022-09-07T19:50:55","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T00:50:55","slug":"obituary-michael-eliam-mike-carter-october-11-1956-september-4-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/obituary-michael-eliam-mike-carter-october-11-1956-september-4-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Obituary: Michael Eliam \u201cMike\u201d Carter (October 11, 1956-September 4, 2022)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Oxford\/Tupelo<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Michael Eliam \u201cMike\u201d Carter<\/strong> died on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at his home in Oxford.\u00a0 Mike was born on October 11, 1956, in Tupelo to <strong>Dorothy Sue Turner Clark<\/strong> and the late <strong>Eliam Baxter Carter<\/strong>.\u00a0 He graduated from <strong>Tupelo High School<\/strong> in 1974 and continued his studies at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> earning a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Business Administration in 1979 where he was a member of <strong>Sigma Nu Fraternity<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike was a salesman and entrepreneur.&nbsp; He enjoyed a long and successful career in the furniture business entering the business in January, 1982 and retiring the summer of 2021.&nbsp; He was an extraordinarily gifted salesman. Always dedicated and loyal to his customers, Mike used the power of his relationships to bond with people and he generated friendships on deep levels that went beyond furniture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, Mike started investing in real estate.&nbsp; What started as a side project quickly became a passion of Mike\u2019s and a second career after he retired from the furniture business.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike was one of a kind and he never met a stranger. He had a quick smile and an easy laugh. Mike was a dedicated <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> fan.\u00a0 He loved the beach. \u00a0 He was a kind and generous friend helping those in need without seeking acknowledgement or praise.\u00a0 Mike loved people and treated them without partiality no matter their station in life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of all, Mike was dedicated to his family. He was faithful to his mom, <strong>Sudie<\/strong>. A loving and attentive partner to <strong>Dede<\/strong>. He found great joy in his daughter, <strong>Liza <\/strong>and son, <strong>Riley<\/strong>.\u00a0 His two grand daughters, <strong>Ellie <\/strong>and <strong>Carter<\/strong>, were his pride and joy and being their \u201cGrandpops\u201d may have been his greatest role.\u00a0 Mike\u2019s living was not in vain\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A service celebrating Mike\u2019s life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 9, 2022 in the <strong>Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel<\/strong> at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Rev. <strong>Chris McAllilly<\/strong> and Rev. <strong>Eddie Rester<\/strong>, present and former pastors of <strong>Oxford-University United Methodist Church<\/strong> where Mike joyfully attended, officiating. Visitation will be from Noon-1:45 PM Friday at Holland\u2019s. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com\/Livestreaming\">www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com\/Livestreaming<\/a> and will be archived thereafter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike is survived by his mother, <strong>Dorothy Sue Carter Clark<\/strong> of Belden; his partner of over twenty years, <strong>DeDe Best Miley<\/strong> of Oxford and Tupelo; his daughter, <strong>Liza Carter Valentine<\/strong> and her husband <strong>Nelson Valentine<\/strong> of New York; his son, <strong>Riley Carter<\/strong> and fianc\u00e9 <strong>Melissa Ramsey<\/strong> of New Orleans and 2 granddaughters <strong>Ellie <\/strong>and <strong>Carter Valentine<\/strong>.\u00a0 He is also survived by DeDe\u2019s daughter, <strong>Doty Miley DuHon<\/strong> and husband, <strong>Andrew <\/strong>and their daughter, <strong>Ruby DuHon<\/strong> and DeDe\u2019s son, <strong>John Wilson Miley<\/strong> and countless friends all over the world. He was preceded in death by his father, Eliam Carter and a sister, <strong>Suzanne Carter Cooper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pallbearers will be longtime childhood friends, <strong>Mark Anderson, Scott Reed, Roger Lawson, Ken Robbins<\/strong>, and longtime college friend and Godfather to Riley, <strong>Fel Salmon<\/strong>.\u00a0 Memorials may be sent to the <strong>University of Mississippi Foundation<\/strong>, Mike Carter Memorial Fund, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS. 38655 or the Boys and Girls Club of North Mississippi, P. O. Box 1098., Tupelo, MS. 38802.
