Theatre Oxford<\/a><\/strong> will present two original, short plays for the HOKA Days Fringe Festival<\/strong><\/a> on Saturday, August 27<\/strong> at 6 pm and 7:30 pm at The Powerhouse<\/strong>, 413 South 14th Street.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong>, HOKA Days Fringe Festival is a month-long sampler of multiple artistic experiences. Theatre Oxford has collaborated with two playwrights to contribute a theatrical experience to the festival. In between the plays, there will be a Meet the Playwrights hour for anyone interested in learning more about their stories.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both plays are free admission! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the two plays touches on the common, annoying situation of flying next to a fervid conversationalist. Mr. Patterson\u2019s Aborted Flight<\/strong><\/em>, written by Charlie Finesilver<\/strong> of South Carolina<\/strong>, fantasizes what it would be like to get rid of the person sitting next to you on a plane who will not stop talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mama\u2019s Flowerbed<\/strong> <\/em>by Oxford local, LaToya Faulk<\/strong>, explores the culture gap between siblings and their understandings of place. Watch magic unfold as family members deal with the hardship of losing a parent and the obstacles that come along with the pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says: \u201cWhat does it mean to be home? Is home a place where ancestral history resides? Where one feels free? Black Americans have a unique subject position in this country when it comes to considerations of home and our connection or ambivalences of America and Africa. Moreso, I believe the play wants to center these ideas of home and place in relation of family, gender\u2014and ones\u2019 owned environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theatre Oxford is a nonprofit organization that has been Creating Community One Play at a Time for 23 years and counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
