{"id":121707,"date":"2022-08-08T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=121707"},"modified":"2022-08-07T12:06:12","modified_gmt":"2022-08-07T17:06:12","slug":"oxford-police-department-steps-up-effort-to-force-traffic-to-stop-for-school-buses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-police-department-steps-up-effort-to-force-traffic-to-stop-for-school-buses\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Police Department Steps Up Effort to Force Traffic to Stop for School Buses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Oxford Police Department<\/strong> wants to remind motorists as students head back to the\u00a0classroom to stop for school buses or face the consequences. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officers will be out looking for drivers who disregard the red flashing stop sign on stopped school\u00a0buses in both marked and unmarked vehicles. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The safety of children getting on and off school buses is a top priority for OPD,&#8221; said Chief <strong>Jeff \u00a0McCutchen<\/strong>. &#8220;Help us keep our children out of harm&#8217;s way by slowing down, paying attention, and \u00a0avoiding distractions.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop when the overhead lights on a school bus are flashing \u00a0yellow. Once the lights turn red and the stop arm extends, drivers are required to stop on all roads\u00a0with one exception. On highways divided by a physical barrier, such as a concrete wall or a grassy\u00a0median, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2021-2022 school year, the Oxford Police Department issued 22 citations for passing a stopped school bus.
