(TLV) \u2013 On Valentine\u2019s Day, 1864, there was no love in the city of Meridian, Mississippi. Residents were fleeing for their life, with whatever they could carry, as Union General <b>William Tecumseh Sherman<\/b>\u2019s army of 23,000 men invaded, destroyed the railroads, and burned the town. Sherman\u2019s Federal army spent five days in February 1864 destroying just about everything of value in the area. Photograph by Newt Rayburn.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">One hundred and fifty years later, the city\u2019s tourism council <b>VisitMeridan.com<\/b> is commemorating their Civil War history by unveiling a new \u201cCivil War Trail\u201d to attract cultural tourism. The new trail features custom made markers at ten of the most important Civil War-era attractions in Lauderdale County, including cemeteries, battlegrounds, train depots, and one of the only buildings that remain from the time period, the <b>Merrehope<\/b> mansion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The city held a symposium on February 14, 2014 at the <b>Union Train Depot<\/b> featuring a variety of well known speakers. Brigadier General <b>Parker Hills<\/b> gave a fascinating and lively presentation called \u201cFrom the Red River to the Queen City.\u201d Hills is a well known military historian and author, and owner of the leadership training company <b>Battle Focus<\/b>. His speech tied Meridian\u2019s burning into the wider conflict of 1864 that included the Union occupation of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the Red River Campaign in Louisiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">&#8220;Meridian was kind of his dress rehearsal for what Sherman would do in Georgia \u2014 his Atlanta campaign and his march to the sea,&#8221; Hills said. &#8220;He was practicing his concept of the total war.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Following the symposium, Meridian and Lauderdale County Tourism Director <b>Dede Mogollon<\/b>, and <b>Malcolm White<\/b>, Director of the Mississippi Development Authority\u2019s Tourism Division, unveiled the first marker of the city\u2019s historic trail at the Train Depot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Their work is expected to pay off, according to Malcolm White.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">&#8220;This whole idea of cultural and heritage tourism is something that Mississippi has really taken root in and we&#8217;re really doing a great job,&#8221; White said. &#8220;I think it can be a new economy for us and certainly it&#8217;s a new tourism tool.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12159\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12159\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/58-IMG_6089.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12159\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/58-IMG_6089.jpg?resize=434%2C650\" width=\"434\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/58-IMG_6089.jpg?w=434&amp;ssl=1 434w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/58-IMG_6089.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mississippi Representative Greg Snowden speaks about Union General Sherman&#8217;s invasion of Meridian from the sitting room at Merrehope. Photograph by Newt Rayburn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Speakers at the historic home included Mississippi Representative and Civil War historian <b>Greg Snowden<\/b>, Merrehope historian <b>Fonda Rush<\/b>, and <b>Betty Lou Jones<\/b> of the Meridian Restorations Foundation. Live music was played by <b>Britt Gully<\/b> and <b>Scott McQuaig<\/b>, who entertained the crowd with Civil War era songs like \u201cLorena,\u201d \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d and \u201cDixie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The city of Meridian hopes to attract thousands of Civil War tourists to the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u201cNow we are validating the fact that this is a very important and very significant part of Mississippi history and a very important part of Meridian&#8217;s history,\u201d said Betty Lou Jones of the Meridian Restorations Foundation. \u201cSherman didn&#8217;t burn us. We do exist.
