As he approaches the next step on his journey\u2014a doctorate in composition\u2014he must compile a portfolio to showcase his knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K9aU25z8_wM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Perhaps you enjoyed his recent music video for <strong>\u201cSky &amp; Sea,\u201d<\/strong> a short orchestral piece he recorded with nine musicians, socially distanced during Covid-19, which screened at the<strong> Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> this past March. Or maybe you\u2019ve seen his impromptu classical piano recitals on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damein\u2019s current endeavor is to record his original choral works with a group of professional singers, <strong>The Southern Vocal Collective<\/strong>, which consists of artists from around the region. The group came together in 2019, created in part by <strong>Dasha Teelin<\/strong>. Local members include tenor <strong>Adam Stringer<\/strong>, organist at <strong>Saint Peter\u2019s Episcopal Church<\/strong>; <strong>Ontarius Woodland<\/strong>, a tenor at <strong>First Presbyterian Church<\/strong>; and pianist\/organist <strong>Creighton Holder<\/strong>, who is the new choirmaster at First Presbyterian. The concert will feature a performance of various choral works, including compositions by <strong>Johannes Brahms<\/strong>, <strong>Edward Bairstow<\/strong>, <strong>Norman Dello Joio<\/strong>, <strong>Alice Parker<\/strong>, and of course, Damein Wash, who will also serve as conductor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help with the considerable cost of creating this musical work, Wash teamed up with the <strong>Yoknapatawpha Arts Council <\/strong>to produce an exciting event called <strong>&#8220;A kNight of Chivalry<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 7 pm on <strong>Wednesday, July 20<\/strong>, <strong>The Powerhouse Community Arts Center<\/strong> (413 S 14th Street) will transform into a fantastic, live-action representation of <strong>\u201cThe Hero\u2019s Journey.\u201d<\/strong> This journey, known as the \u201cmonomyth,\u201d follows a narrative pattern common to many stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCampbell basically said that all stories have the same running theme, the same tropes,\u201d said Wash. \u201cSo, a lot of people who go into writing stories, books, films, read Joseph Campbell. I read \u2026 <em>The Hero with a Thousand Faces<\/em> [when I was writing my screenplay]. It\u2019s very central to storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by Campbell\u2019s arc of the hero, Wash decided to create this special musical event as a fundraiser for the recording of his original choral works. Patrons will enter The Powerhouse to embark on a walk-through of the Hero\u2019s Journey, accompanied by singers from The Southern Vocal Collective, local actors, and multi-instrumentalist groups <strong>The Old Ways<\/strong> and <strong>The Mockingbird Early Music Ensemble<\/strong>, while enjoying a feast of wine, mead from <strong>The Queen\u2019s Reward Meadery<\/strong>, and meat provided by <strong>Homeplace Pastures<\/strong>, prepared by <strong>Tim Woodard<\/strong> of <strong>Little Easy Catering<\/strong>. Walk into the theater and behold <strong>The Memphis Armored Fight Club<\/strong> in full knight regalia sparring on stage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will be constant singing and music the whole way, so it\u2019s not like a concert where you have to shut up and listen,\u201d Wash said. It\u2019s more like a miniature Renaissance Faire. \u201cThere\u2019s music over here, music in the next part of the journey, and around the whole room, so it will be very social, and there will be noshing.
