Awards were presented based on two population categories: under 10,000 and over 10,000, with one overall winner. Within each population range, there were four subject categories: public safety, planning and economic development, public works/infrastructure improvements, and city spirit. Winners were chosen by a committee of judges outside of the MML and one overall winner was chosen from all award applications. The City of Oxford submitted an application within the planning and economic development subject based on the development of the East Jackson Streetscape project.

The East Jackson Streetscape project began as a sidewalk expansion that was to take place in 2020. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city shut down all non-emergency projects, including the East Jackson sidewalk project. After a period of time where local restaurants were able to “lease” sidewalks for outdoor dining, the City took the opportunity to fulfill the original sidewalk expansion project while increasing the footprint to create “shared spaces” for restaurants to lease sidewalks for outdoor dining, year-round. Construction of the streetscape began mid-May and was finished nearly two weeks ahead of the original August 17th deadline, prior to the beginning of the University of Mississippi academic year.

“We are so proud of the East Jackson Streetscape project and so proud of the staff members who were able to make it a reality. I always say that the City of Oxford has the best employees and this award just reiterates that sentiment,” said Mayor Robyn Tannehill on learning of the award.

Visit Oxford planned a day of celebration called “Eat In the Street” in August 2021.
