This June, the annual Summer Sunset Series<\/strong> returns to The Grove<\/strong> stage on the campus of the University of Mississippi<\/strong>. Summer Sunset Series is a community event made possible through a collaboration of Visit Oxford, Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong>, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong>, and the University of Mississippi Museum<\/strong>. Each Sunday night in June, starting at 6 pm,\u00a0locals and visitors alike can bring a blanket or lawn chair and set up their own picnic to listen to live music.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series will kick off on June 5 to celebrate the 50th <\/sup>anniversary of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council as\u00a0 well as the 25th <\/sup>anniversary of Thacker Mountain Radio Show<\/strong>. To commemorate these milestones,\u00a0 Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will serve cake and punch as guests listen in to a live Thacker Mountain\u00a0 Radio show. Following the radio show, Madrik<\/strong>, a seven-piece band comprised of musicians with\u00a0decades of experience drawing influences from house, hip-hop, drum & bass, pop, funk, and soul, will perform. These heavy hitter\u2019s meticulously crafted, high-energy sets will keep you moving and grooving\u00a0with their originality. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday, June 12, the series will feature the Bill Perry Quintet<\/strong> sponsored by the University of Mississippi\u00a0 Center for the Study of Southern Culture and Living Blues<\/strong><\/em>. Perry has been performing music\u00a0 professionally since 1993 and has played in every major blues & jazz festival in Mississippi. He also\u00a0 performed at New York\u2019s premier blues club, Terra Blues<\/strong>, with his father and legendary blues musician,\u00a0 Bill \u201cHowl-N\u2019-Madd\u201d Perry<\/strong>. The quintet features a group of passionate musicians with years of\u00a0 experience to provide the crowd a unique, heartfelt show.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Mississippi Museum is the sponsor of the June 19 concert featuring Alice Hasen & The Blaze<\/strong>. Hasen began her musical studies at the age of four with a background in classical traditional,\u00a0 but is now most at home at the crossroads of genre, pushing the traditional violin and fiddle sounds out of their comfort zones. This \u201cfiddle-powered groove band\u201d is rooted in the Memphis <\/strong>heritage of funk, rock, and jazz but can stray into pop, hip-hop, and even reggae territory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final performance of the Series will feature local musician Aaron Hall<\/strong> sponsored by Yoknapatawpha\u00a0 Arts Council. Originally from Hattiesburg<\/strong>, Hall\u2019s music is relatable with his adept storytelling. His true\u00a0 passion of songwriting is portrayed through his music and lyrics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
