During this year\u2019s national Click It or Ticket<\/strong> <\/em>seat belt campaign, which will take\u00a0place May 23 through June 5, 2022, the Oxford Police Department<\/strong> will be teaming up with law enforcement nationwide for a Border to Border<\/strong> <\/em>(B2B) kickoff event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/strong> (NHTSA) is asking all states to participate in B2B, a one-day, 4-hour national seat belt awareness event on May 23, which\u00a0 is coordinated by participating state highway safety offices and their respective law\u00a0enforcement liaisons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The B2B initiative aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible seat belt enforcement for drivers at state border checkpoints.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to NHTSA, in 2020, there were 10,893 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 58% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 pm\u20135:59 am) were not wearing their seat belts. That\u2019s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket <\/em>campaign and the B2B kickoff event is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations both day and night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Border to Border <\/em>component of the Click It or Ticket <\/em>campaign is important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during a time when seat belt use is decreased,\u201d said\u00a0Chief Jeff McCutchen<\/strong>. \u201cWith an increased number of cars flooding the roads due to the\u00a0upcoming Memorial Day holiday, it\u2019s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf enforcement wakes people up to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we\u2019ll consider our mission to be a success,\u201d said Chief McCutchen. \u201cIf you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits.\u00a0Seat belts save lives, and everyone \u2014 front seat and back, child and adult \u2014 needs to remember to buckle up.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
