{"id":119356,"date":"2022-04-25T11:45:02","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T16:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=119356"},"modified":"2022-04-25T11:45:04","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T16:45:04","slug":"rivers-rutherford-shares-stories-behind-his-best-selling-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/rivers-rutherford-shares-stories-behind-his-best-selling-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"Rivers Rutherford Shares Stories Behind His Best-Selling Songs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Musician, University of Mississippi alumnus featured April 29 at The Lyric in Oxford<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame<\/strong> member <strong>Rivers Rutherford<\/strong> will share stories and songs during a special evening event Friday, April 29, 2022 at <strong>The Lyric<\/strong> in <strong>Oxford<\/strong>, <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stories behind some of Rutherford&#8217;s most popular songs will be told by the acclaimed musician at the 7 pm event hosted by the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/omwc.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ole Miss Women&#8217;s Council for Philanthropy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as part of the <strong>Robert C. Khayat Lecture Series<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford, one of country music&#8217;s most admired artists, has\u00a0written a dozen No. 1 hits and earned multiple <strong>Grammys<\/strong>, <strong>CMA<\/strong>, and <strong>ACM <\/strong>nominations, and more than 20 <strong>ASCAP <\/strong>awards, including <strong>Country Song of the Year<\/strong> and <strong>Songwriter of the Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s an impressive list of accomplishments for the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0alumnus, who was born in <strong>Memphis, Tennessee<\/strong>, and grew up just blocks from <strong>Elvis<\/strong>&#8216; home, <strong>Graceland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m an Ole Miss man and Rebel fan, and I get to Oxford as often as I can,&#8221; said Rutherford, who has worked as a professional musician in Nashville, Tennessee, for more than 30 years since earning his bachelor&#8217;s degree in English from UM in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Lyric is a great venue that I love playing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m so grateful to the Ole Miss Women&#8217;s Council and my friend Karen Moore for giving me the opportunity to come play in our &#8216;hometown.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moore, also of <strong>Nashville<\/strong>, is a UM alumna and an active member and former chair of the Women&#8217;s Council, which has been described as one of the most innovative scholarship programs in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is said that the universal language is music, and no one can tell a story through song better than Ole Miss alum Rivers Rutherford,&#8221; Moore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was a perfect choice for this latest installment of our Robert C. Khayat Lecture Series because of his popularity with past songwriter events, his incredible catalog of No. 1 hits and his work with so many legendary artists and musicians.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford launched his career as a songwriter by having one of his first songs recorded by <strong>The Highwaymen<\/strong>, a supergroup featuring <strong>Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings<\/strong>, and <strong>Kris Kristofferson<\/strong>. Khayat Lecture Series. This series was first\u00a0announced in early 2021 during an OMWC event featuring a conversation with <strong>Amy Grant<\/strong>, the Nashville-based singer, songwriter and musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The series brings renowned cross-cultural leaders, entrepreneurs and philanthropists to the Oxford campus, creating opportunities for these speakers to share ideas and experiences designed to inspire audience members through thought-provoking topics and conversations,&#8221; said <strong>Liz Randall<\/strong>, OMWC chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By setting the series in a larger venue, it provides a platform for a diverse audience blend including students, scholar mentors, alumni and others from around the state,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Ultimately, the lecture series will benefit the Ole Miss family first and foremost, but provide value to our state overall.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since being launched last year, the series, named in honor of Chancellor Emeritus <strong>Robert Khayat<\/strong>, has featured a conversation with Khayat, a family discussion about substance misuse by <strong>David Magee<\/strong>, author of <em>Dear William,<\/em> and an acoustic performance by Grammy Award-winning musician <strong>Charles Kelley<\/strong> of the popular trio <strong>Lady A<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proceeds from the RCK Lecture Series support the OMWC&#8217;s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/omwc.olemiss.edu\/giving\/ways-to-give\/global-leadership-circle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Global Leadership Circle<\/strong><\/a>, an international studies and internship initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information or to support the Robert C.
