Walton"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Former colleagues, friends among those paying respects<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gerald W. Walton<\/strong>, respected and beloved <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> retired administrator and English professor, is being fondly remembered by family and friends. Walton, 87, died Thursday, February 24, 2022 at <strong>Trezevant Manor<\/strong> in Memphis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A memorial service was held Saturday, February 26 at <strong>Oxford-University United Methodist Church<\/strong> beginning at 11 am <strong>Waller Funeral Home<\/strong> of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trailblazer who became UM\u2019s first provost, Walton came to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 1956 and joined the faculty in 1962. During his 40-year tenure, he was director of Freshman English, associate dean of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libarts.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong><\/a>, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was also acting vice chancellor for academic affairs on three separate occasions and interim chancellor for a month in 1995. He was provost from 1996 until he retired in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGerald Walton was a respected academician, administrator and longtime friend,\u201d said UM Chancellor Emeritus <strong>Robert C. Khayat<\/strong>. \u201cHis dedication to Ole Miss, its people and its future was unwavering. His perseverance and wise counsel were greatly appreciated. I will always remember him for his intellect, creativity, kindness, tolerance and strong value system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gloria Kellum<\/strong>, vice chancellor emeritus of University Relations, remembers Walton as a \u201cvery good friend and very kind and positive person to everyone that he met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Walton was a strong advocate for faculty and for the development of academic programs,\u201d said Kellum, recalling the professional camaraderie and abiding friendship the two shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Walton was a very gifted writer and communicator. We worked together on various university projects,\u201d she said. \u201cI have always had an immense respect for how much he loved the university and its students. He was truly a champion who created many educational opportunities for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kellum said Walton also had a wonderful sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe always had a way to come up with the right quip at the right time. His jokes would have everyone in the room laughing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Morris Stocks<\/strong>, provost emeritus, chancellor emeritus and professor of accountancy, described Walton as \u201ca powerful and strong leader on campus, a scholar, thinker and creator of books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe celebrate Gerald Walton\u2019s extraordinary life,\u201d he said. \u201cHe truly made a lasting, positive impact upon all of us who worked with him and knew him well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walton was warmly remembered by one of his successors in the provost\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am saddened to learn of former Provost Walton\u2019s passing,\u201d said <strong>Noel Wilkin<\/strong>, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. \u201cHe was a fine administrator and was truly committed to the success of the university. He set a high standard for the academic mission of our institution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A prolific writer and unofficial university historian, Walton authored \u201cThe University of Mississippi: A Pictorial History.\u201d With more than 400 pages of imagery and nostalgia, the book (Booksmith Group, 2008) captures the campus taking shape from its birth to today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Oxford, he was an active member of the Oxford-University United Methodist Church and held several leadership roles there, including historian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He previously served as vice president of the Oxford-University Human Relations Council, was a member of the board of directors of the <strong>Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong>, chair of the <strong>Oxford-Lafayette County Heritage Foundation<\/strong>, a member of the <strong>Oxford Preservation Commission<\/strong>, and president of the <strong>Lafayette County Genealogical and Historical Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was secretary of the <strong>Rotary Club of Oxford<\/strong> and a <strong>Paul Harris<\/strong> fellow. At the statewide level, he was a member of the board of trustees of the <strong>Mississippi Heritage Trust<\/strong> and secretary of the <strong>Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters<\/strong>. He was the longtime secretary-treasurer of the UM\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libraries.olemiss.edu\/friends-of-the-library\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Friends of the Library<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in <strong>Neshoba County<\/strong>, Walton received his bachelor\u2019s degree in English at the <strong>University of Southern Mississippi<\/strong>, his master\u2019s and doctoral degrees at the University of Mississippi, and held a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the <strong>University of Nebraska<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walton was a dedicated and loving husband of 66 years to his wife, <strong>Juliet Walton<\/strong>, an associate professor of communicative disorders, and a loving father to three daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Waltons moved to <strong>Memphis<\/strong> in 2014. He was a volunteer at Trezevant Manor, where he served on several committees and was president of the Residents\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walton is survived by his wife, Juliet Hart Walton; daughters <strong>Katherine <\/strong>(and husband <strong>Brent Hudspeth<\/strong>) of <strong>Atlanta<\/strong>, <strong>Dorothy <\/strong>(and husband <strong>John Laurenzo<\/strong>) of Oxford, and <strong>Margaret <\/strong>(and husband <strong>Leo Seicshnaydre<\/strong>) of Oxford; grandchildren <strong>William Laurenzo<\/strong>, <strong>Juliet Laurenzo<\/strong>, <strong>Anna Laurenzo<\/strong>, <strong>Gerald Hudspeth<\/strong>, <strong>Virginia Hudspeth<\/strong>, <strong>Elizabeth Seicshnaydre<\/strong>, and <strong>Lucy Seicshnaydre<\/strong>; brother <strong>Johnny Walton<\/strong> (and wife <strong>Bobbie<\/strong>) of <strong>Starkville<\/strong>, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either Friends of the Library at the University of Mississippi (University Foundation, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS 38655) or the Trezevant Manor Foundation at 177 N.
