Constructed from a wealth of archival footage, King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis<\/strong><\/em> is a monumental documentary that follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/strong> from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement. Rare footage of King’s speeches, protests, and arrests are interspersed with scenes of other high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause, punctuated by heartfelt testimonials by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King<\/em> was originally presented as a one-night-only special event on March 20, 1970, at an epic length of more than three hours (plus intermission). Since that time, the film has occasionally been circulated in a version shortened by more than an hour. Newly restored by the Library of Congress<\/strong>, in association with Richard Kaplan<\/strong>, and utilizing film elements provided by The Museum of Modern Art<\/strong>, the original version of King<\/em> can again be seen in its entirety, mastered in HD from the 35mm preservation negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admitted to the National Film Registry <\/strong>in 1999, King<\/em> is a cinematic national treasure that allows viewers to be first-hand witnesses to Dr. King’s crusade, and thereby gain a fuller appreciation of both the personal challenges he endured and the vast cultural legacy he left behind. Guest appearances by Harry Belafonte<\/strong>, Ruby Dee<\/strong>, Ben Gazzara<\/strong>, Charlton Heston<\/strong>, James Earl Jones<\/strong>, Burt Lancaster<\/strong>, Paul Newman<\/strong>, Anthony Quinn<\/strong>, Clarence Williams III<\/strong>, and Joanne Woodward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chet Bush <\/strong>is a history instructor at the University of Mississippi<\/strong>. He is the author of Called to the Fire<\/em><\/strong>, a true story of Dr. Charles Johnson<\/strong>, an African American preacher who went to Mississippi in 1961 during the summer of the Freedom Rides. Chet received a bachelor s degree in Religion from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. He earned the Master of Divinity degree at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. Bush was ordained an Elder in the Church of the Nazarene in Houston, Texas, in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n
