{"id":114928,"date":"2021-10-25T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=114928"},"modified":"2022-01-30T14:50:36","modified_gmt":"2022-01-30T20:50:36","slug":"learning-the-art-of-civil-discourse-ole-miss-students-apply-ethical-theory-for-decision-making-and-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/learning-the-art-of-civil-discourse-ole-miss-students-apply-ethical-theory-for-decision-making-and-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning the Art of Civil Discourse: Ole Miss Students Apply Ethical Theory for Decision-Making and Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Department of Philosophy and Religion<\/strong>&nbsp;at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> is offering two events in the next few weeks exploring the ethical issues of timely topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just Conversations<\/strong> is a fun event run by students from the <strong>Ethical Policy Debates<\/strong> class to explore ethical issues and think about potential solutions through&nbsp;low-key conversation on two hot-button issues. The event is an&nbsp;in-person reception from 5 to 6:30 pm Monday (October 25) in the <strong>Bryant Hall Gallery<\/strong>. Register by 5 pm Friday (October 22) at&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/xCS1QNTpZvnvtxQv9\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/xCS1QNTpZvnvtxQv9<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second event, <strong>The Great Debate of 2021<\/strong>, poses the question &#8220;Should patents be waived on COVID-19 vaccines to increase global vaccination rates?&#8221; The virtual event on November 11 features presentation of a debate followed by a Q&amp;A between the teams, expert panelists and the audience. All are welcome to attend virtually, especially members of the campus community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Dialogue and Deliberation Initiative events, both Just Conversations and The Great Debate of 2021, bring people together to discuss ethical problems that involve multiple perspectives, competing interests and complex empirical issues in a civil format for productive outcomes,&#8221; said <strong>Deborah Mower<\/strong>, a UM associate professor of philosophy and the Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hume Bryant&nbsp;Associate Professor of Ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B098TMKMJT\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B098TMKMJT&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thelocalvoice-20&amp;linkId=0aca9e291f7b24074992a91146a488d7\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=B098TMKMJT&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;tag=thelocalvoice-20\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will be focusing on three topics from the slate of fall 2021 Regional Ethics Bowl cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ole Miss students are conducting research to prepare for discussions about rock climbing on federally protected indigenous cultural sites, the Disney company image and COVID-19 vaccine patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is no better educational model than the Ethics Bowl for teaching students how to apply ethical theory for decision-making and policy while at the same time fostering skills crucial for civil dialogue,&#8221; Mower said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is so valuable to have our students thinking and working collaboratively toward solutions for these hot-button issues that our nation wrestles with currently.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>UM Ethics Bowl<\/strong> team won the 2019 <strong>Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate will be live-streamed via Zoom from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Nov. 11.
