{"id":114565,"date":"2021-10-11T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=114565"},"modified":"2021-10-10T22:11:11","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T03:11:11","slug":"a-legacy-of-support-and-inspiration-university-of-mississippi-student-tommy-tosh-helping-others-20-years-after-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/a-legacy-of-support-and-inspiration-university-of-mississippi-student-tommy-tosh-helping-others-20-years-after-death\/","title":{"rendered":"A Legacy of Support and Inspiration: University of Mississippi Student Tommy Tosh Helping Others 20 Years After Death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Family and friends of the late <strong>Tommy Tosh<\/strong> in <strong>Oxford <\/strong>and throughout the country recently marked the 20th anniversary of\u00a0the young man&#8217;s untimely death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tosh, a <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> senior and\u00a0dedicated\u00a0<strong>Rebel <\/strong>fan, died September 29, 2001, from injuries sustained\u00a0in a car wreck near <strong>Nashville, Tennessee<\/strong>. He and\u00a0friends were involved in what was determined to be\u00a0an unavoidable accident as they drove to <strong>Lexington, Kentucky<\/strong>, for an <strong>Ole Miss-Kentucky<\/strong> football game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Oxford native, the 21-year-old Tosh&nbsp;touched the lives of hundreds of&nbsp;community members&nbsp;and Ole Miss alumni and continues to have a positive impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the generosity of family and friends,\u00a0Tosh&#8217;s joyous spirit lives on through the <strong>Tommy Tosh Memorial Scholarship<\/strong>\u00a0at Ole Miss. As a way to celebrate his life, honor his memory, promote his supportive attitude toward others and cherish his kind nature, the scholarship was established in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the&nbsp;endowment has&nbsp;grown, providing more&nbsp;assistance to more students. It offers $5,000 a year for four years to four students at any given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarship&#8217;s goal remains the same: to assist <strong>Oxford High School<\/strong> graduates who are passionate about the community and Ole Miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kyle Gordon<\/strong>, of Oxford, was\u00a0only\u00a07 months old when\u00a0Tosh\u00a0died.\u00a0Yet today, this\u00a0<strong>Tommy Tosh Scholar<\/strong> and sophomore\u00a0in the UM School of Applied Sciences\u00a0is learning the skills he needs to help others who have speech, language or hearing disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want&nbsp;to thank&nbsp;the late Mr. Tosh,&nbsp;and&nbsp;his family, friends and supporters&nbsp;who created this scholarship,&#8221; Gordon said. &#8220;I hope they&nbsp;know how much I appreciate all they have done to provide me and so many others with the opportunity to obtain an education and provide us with a path to a rewarding career.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mary Sloan Thompson<\/strong>, one of Tosh&#8217;s Oxford classmates and friends, spoke to the person he was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tommy had the best smile,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He just lit up the room and instantly made you feel good. You wanted to be where he was because he was so very genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He would be so humbled to&nbsp;know that so many people who loved him came together to establish a scholarship in his name that provides a way to assist Ole Miss students like Kyle&nbsp;achieve their academic and professional dreams.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his death,\u00a0friends established the <strong>Tommy\u00a0Tosh Golf\u00a0Classic<\/strong>\u00a0to raise money\u00a0in his memory because golf was Tosh&#8217;s favorite sport.\u00a0Though the tournament has been discontinued, the scholarship endowment continues to grow with gifts from friends and Tommy&#8217;s family,\u00a0including his parents, retired UM real estate professor <strong>Dennis Tosh<\/strong> and his wife, <strong>Beth<\/strong>, and their children, <strong>Christine Tosh Rayburn<\/strong> and <strong>Denny Tosh<\/strong>, all of Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ben Peeler<\/strong>,\u00a0a Tosh Scholar and UM business student, has his eyes on a career as a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m enormously grateful for the Tommy Tosh Memorial Scholarship and those who provided me with this academic opportunity,&#8221; Peeler said. &#8220;What is equally important, if not more so, is that the members of the Tosh family are the kindest people I&#8217;ve ever met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This scholarship is one of the greatest honors I&#8217;ve ever had, and nothing makes my day like being able to talk with the Tosh family and know I have their support and encouragement.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rayburn&nbsp;said her brother is greatly missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are forever grateful for Tommy&#8217;s smile, his humor and his deep love for his God, family and friends,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Even after 20 years, the very best of Tommy can still be seen and felt through those who knew him.
