The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour <\/strong>continues its fall season this Thursday, September 16, at the Old Armory Pavilion<\/strong> at 6:30 pm. The later start time, rather than the usual 6 pm, is an effort to avoid the harsh heat of sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to start at 6:30 for all of our Pavilion shows this fall,\u201d says Thacker producer Kathryn McGaw York<\/strong>. \u201cWe hope our audience can adapt to the new time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

York says a \u201cHalf-Hour Happy Hour\u201d will be available for those who arrive before six. \u201cParty Waiting to Happen and Cat Head Vodka are sponsoring a signature drink that will be for sale before the show for those who arrive a little early,\u201d York notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admission is free. Lawn chairs and picnics are encouraged. The Old Oxford Armory Pavilion is located at the corner of Bramlett Boulevard and University Avenue (commonly known as the Farmer\u2019s Market location).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Katherine Backstrom<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Guests on the Thursday, September 16 show will include author Mary Katherine Backstrom<\/strong> (Holy Hot Mess<\/em><\/strong>), singer-songwriter Michael Jay Hughes<\/strong>, and North Mississippi blues artist Sharde Thomas<\/strong> & The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show is hosted by Jim Dees <\/strong>and Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The live radio broadcast can be heard locally every Thursday on WUMS<\/strong> (92.1 FM in Oxford) and online: https:\/\/myrebelradio.com\/<\/a>. Each Thursday show is broadcast the following week on Mississippi Public Broadcasting<\/strong> and other outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Holy Hot Mess<\/em>, author Backstrom uses heartbreaking and hilarious stories of friendship, motherhood, and even depression, to illustrate how we are all a \u201chot mess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharde Thomas<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sharde Thomas is the granddaughter of the late Othar Turner<\/strong>, a leading practitioner of the North Mississippi fife and drum tradition. The New York Times<\/em> has called Thomas and her band, the Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band, \u201cthe last living link to fife and drum music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singer-songwriter Michael Jay Hughes hails from Goshen, Alabama, and bills his sound as \u201creal country music.\u201d His latest singles are “Playing with Fire” and “Dirt Road Whiskey.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests for future shows include Chef John Currence <\/strong>(Tailgreat!<\/em><\/strong> – September 23); Jimbo Mathus<\/strong> (September 30);
Kenny Brown and Cary Hudson<\/strong> (October 7); and Bobby Rush<\/strong> (October 21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long-running radio show, now in its 24th year, has temporarily moved from its normal venue, Off Square Books<\/strong>, to the Armory Pavilion which is an open-air facility and allows for audience spacing. The show will perform at the Pavilion every Thursday at 6:30 \u2013 7:30 pm through November 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
