While the city had plans to expand the sidewalks of the busy street pre-pandemic, the need and popularity of temporary outdoor dining during COVID altered\u00a0those plans slightly. From a basic expansion due to safety concerns, the current design will\u00a0create a pedestrian-friendly area while allowing restaurants to expand their footprint to allow permanent outdoor dining and shops to utilize space for sidewalk sales, et al.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the project came to fruition, <strong>Visit Oxford Executive Director Kinney Ferris<\/strong> and her team wanted to commemorate the new space. \u201cWe are thrilled that our visitors and community will now have a more pedestrian friendly area and that the businesses will have expanded\u00a0footprints,\u201d Ferris said. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to bring live music to the newly reconfigured street and celebrate that we now have permanent outdoor dining with \u2018Eat in the Street.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>Saturday, August 28<\/strong>, <strong>Jackson Avenue East<\/strong> will be blocked to thru traffic which will allow family-friendly festivities throughout the day before ending with live music on-stage at the west\u00a0end near the Federal building and St. Peter\u2019s Episcopal church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get your stretch on<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start the morning with Yoga in the Street at 8 am with <strong>Lydia Siniard Foster<\/strong>. Bring your yoga mat\u00a0and get your sweat on in the street in front of Visit Oxford.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Family friendly activities<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From 10:30 am until 12:30 pm, a balloon artist will be set up on the lawn of Visit Oxford creating balloon art for children. From 1-4 pm, <strong>Ole Miss Athletics<\/strong> will have interactive games for young Rebel fans. This setup will be located in the parking lot behind <strong>Olive Juice Kids<\/strong>, next to Visit Oxford. Members of the athletics department will be present to meet and greet and to\u00a0 distribute promotional posters for the upcoming season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Small bites<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With tables and chairs lining the middle of East Jackson Avenue, patrons can grab food from \u201csmall bites\u201d menus around the Square and, quite literally, eat in the street. Participating restaurants offering special menu items include <strong>Saint Leo<\/strong>, <strong>Moe\u2019s BBQ<\/strong>, and <strong>SoLa<\/strong>. King recorded her first\u00a0single in 1970 but didn\u2019t release her first full-length album, <em><strong>Living in the Last Days<\/strong><\/em>, until 2021. The 77-year-old gospel singer thought she would never have a chance to record her album, but\u00a0said, \u201cBecause after all these years at my age, I never thought I would have another chance. It \u00a0gives me a chance to tell people it\u2019s never too late. But you never know what God is gonna do\u00a0 for you. So just keep striving.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The headliner for \u2018Eat in the Street\u2019 is <strong>Drew Holcomb &amp; The Neighbors <\/strong>who will take the stage \u00a0at 7:30 pm. An Americana act hailing from <strong>Nashville<\/strong>, Drew Holcomb &amp; The Neighbors have sold over 150,000 albums to date and played over 2,000 concert dates in 7 countries.\u00a0Their latest album, <em><strong>Dragons<\/strong><\/em>, is available now after debuting at #1 on the Billboard\u00a0Americana\/Folk Albums, #1 Amazon New Albums, and #1 iTunes Singer Songwriter chart.
